Sorry to stear away from the WWII toy soldier discussion but does anyone know the origin of the Fort Apache toy series? When did it first come into production and how many versions has there been? Was it made by Tempo? I have one packed away at my parents and I remember it being an all metal/tin fold-up suitcase type fort with plastic look out posts on the four corners and plastic fossade buildings inside. The soldiers were of course Union Blue and the Indians were orange in colour. If my memory recalls it was still in pretty good shape but I'm pretty sure some of the Indians and a few soldiers had some battle damage.Broken spears and swords. It provided me with hours of fun thats for sure.Just another trip down memory lane I guess...Actually my mother has been trying to get all my stuff out of the attic and basement for years. Since purchasing my own home I have run out of accuses so someday soon I'll pack a bunch of that stuff up and bring it back across the border.

Fort Apache playsets were made by Marx company from about 1950-1970. There is a wide variety of the sets issued through the years. The metal box ones are called carry-all sets. They did Apache and knight castle in carry all. Value of sets can go into big bucks depending on box and parts. Carry-all sets are common. I have one but sold other sets. A Custer figure came in one of these sets and is rare- fetching $100.00 each. Also some sets like mine have long coat cavalry figures which is getting hard to find. Some of the rarest sets are Johnny Ringo, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Untouchables, Large civil war and battle ground sets. Many other sets were made through the years till Quaker co. bought them and ran it into the ground in the seventies. Figures were neat poses for the time, especially all the character figures. Each set had 4 or more characters done in white or tan colors. There is plenty sets at show if you want to take out a mortage to buy one. Playset magazine (6x year) publishes interesting magazine on sets. Kinda long answer. John http://www.playsetmagazine.com/

I used to have a few of those fort apache sets that my father bought me when I was a kid. I think he liked them more than I did:p . I had two that came with the marx cavalry and both had a different shades of blue and the indains also came with two shades also, one was like a tan and the other was an off orange color. The other sets came with pioneers instead of cavalry. My father also left me a bunch of the marx indains and pioneers from when he was a kid and he had all kinds of different colors on the indains from yellow to brown, red I can,t remember all the exact colors but there were a few. He also had these other indains from the first marx fort apache which looked a bit larger in scale and came with a different cavalry which were also used for the rin tin tin set which he also left me a few figures from but, most of the figures were stolen out of the basement of our tentament house by the kids who lived there I lost just about all of my marx indians and many other figures also but still have quite a few of the the ones my father left to me. I also had one of those metal case castle play sets that the metal carring box opened to make the castle and the other set of knights and vikings and a few other marx sets also. I had a cowboy set that I think you would have really liked ledman! It came with a whole town of these plastic houses that slid together and also came with the stage coach that you posted in your picture. I think it might have been by timpo with those cowboys that you can take apart and remove the heads. My mom has a picture of me opening it up at x-mas when I was a kid next time at her house i,ll see if I can get it and post a picture. She has a few pictures of me playing with my old stuff that are good for a laugh, see also has some pictures of my dad as a kid with his old stuff. I was into all that stuff as a kid and still like to see that old stuff now. I had a few of those old cowboys you posted left to me by my dad and still have a bunch of them at my moms. You,ve got me wanting to go and rumage my moms house now:D .

The pictures are too small. I sent them to Pete to see if he could enlarge them. The stagecoach is Timpo. I like Marx tin litho buildings better then timpo plastic ones. Some figures are timpo swoppets. Leadmen

I have what I believe to be a Marx fort from when I was a kid . It has walls like fort apache but it came with a different gate and a two story blockhouse. The figures were the pioneer ones I believe in a darker blue and the Indians were a tan/orange. I have been really interested in finding what it was and if there are replacement parts for it. The one I have is from the 70's . It was one of my favorite toys as a child and I played with it constantly so I lost a few pieces through the years until it was boxed up.
Thanks for any help.
Greg

Greg There is many dealers at Chicago who can tell you what parts you need. Rooms full of parts and look for Rick Eber and Bob Jones who know alot and carry the stuff. The blockhouse version I think is a good one. I have one not in orginal box. Also, Playset mag carries lists of dealers selling parts and figures.Issue #20 March/April 2005 has a rundown on Apache sets. Set #4202 was the 70's issue. No corner blockhouse, 2 story blockhouse, interlocking fences or walls with Ft. Apache sign above front gate with opening doors. Hard plastic. The 1978 version had royal blue pioneers/cavalry and orange indians. No tin buildings with this set like some sets have. John

Fishead I have the Tempo buildings and stagecoach you are talking about. The stagecoach took a beating and I'm sure it needs almost all new wheels.I remember the whole set was a very time consuming project to set up.I was very young I'm sure so it seemed like forever.
Thanks John for the photos and info.I had to have gotton my Fort Apache carry all set in the 70's.Man did I play with that alot.I do remember seeing some of the Indians at last years OTSN.Maybe if I go next year I'll try and restock my damaged ones..

I see a few more pieces in your picture that I had as a kid that my dad left to me. I,ll bet that he must have had just about half of whats in your picture but my had gotten lost or stolen before they made it to me by way of hand me downs. The wild west stuff I think were his favorites and he still watches all those old western movies all the time. I see the lone ranger and tontoe in the back ground along with roy rogers, those were a few of the ones that he left to me and still may be down in my moms basement somewhere if there not part of what was stolen from the celler. Heres a picture of that wild west town that I had as a kid. This is the set that came with that stage coach in your picture.

Nice picture of Christmas the set. I pick up figures once in awhile. For awhile I was on the Marx kick. I had sets when I was a kid but neatnik mom threw them out along with baseball cards, comics and dimestore and Britains figures. Not a happy camper when I returned from the service. Could have at least asked me in a letter. Leadmen
