Is it my imagination or does there seem to be some loss of detail or something in the glossy vs. the matte. The matte appears much better.

It's just traditional glossy style vs the more detailed matte. The cool thing now is that all Beau Geste and Four Feathers are now available to order in matte. You can order single figures and make up your own set. I will be receiving 4 matte Four Feathers figures this month that I selected from 2 different sets.

when Ana announced the release of the Four Feathers figures in both styles, matte and glossy, she also pointed out that there is a price difference. Due to the advanced painting of the matte figures they are a good bit more expensive.
In case of the mounted Sheikh for example, he comes for $65.00 in gloss but for $90.00 in matte.
More attention to detail is given in the matte painting.
