The following was recently posted by Nick at TSSD on his websiteA WORD ABOUT SHIPPING COSTS

NOT A SUBJECT THAT I LIKE, BUT I FEEL COMPELLED TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE.

THIS WEEK WE LOST A "$ 100. PLUS" SALE TO A LONG-TIME CUSTOMER.

AFTER SPENDING A BIT OF TIME EXCHANGING NUMEROUS EMAILS TO PREPARE AN ORDER FOR THIS CUSTOMER ..... OUR ORDER WAS "CANCELLED" BY THE CUSTOMER.

WE GOT CANCELLED BECAUSE WE DO NOT OFFER FREE SHIPPING.

I UNDERSTAND THAT "BUSINESS IS BUSINESS" .... AND "MONEY IS MONEY".

BUT .... BUT .... BUT .... TO BE 100% HONEST WITH YOU, WE CANNOT AFFORD TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS MAKING BRAND NEW PRODUCTS, AND THEN GIVE AWAY OUR PROFIT.

I MAY BE CRAZY ....

I KNOW I HAVE BRAIN DAMAGE FROM THE STROKE ....

BUT

TO GIVE AWAY OUR HARD-EARNED PROFIT WOULD BE INSANE, IN MY OPINION.

"NON-MANUFACTURING DEALERS" PERHAPS CAN MORE EASILY AFFORD TO GIVE AWAY 10's OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN "FREE SHIPPING" - BUT I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT.

I WAS BORN AT NIGHT, BUT NOT LAST NIGHT !!!!

I HAVE SEEN PLENTY OF BUSINESSES FAIL AND DISAPPEAR, OR EVEN WORSE, THEY REMAIN IN BUSINESS....BUT DO NOT MAKE A NORMAL AND REASONABLE PROFIT. IT'S JUST "TRADING DOLLARS".

COLLECTING TOY SOLDIERS IS A "HOBBY".

MANUFACTURING TOY SOLDIERS IS A "BUSINESS".

( AND AN EXPENSIVE ONE AT THAT !!!! )

DEANNA AND I HAVE BEEN DEALERS AND MORE RECENTLY MANUFACTURERS NOW FOR OVER 17 YEARS.

WE KNOW NEARLY EVERYONE - METAL AND PLASTIC PEOPLE - IN THIS VERY SMALL HOBBY.

I WISH THAT WHOEVER STARTED THIS CRAZY-NESS OF "FREE" AND GIVING AWAY THEIR BUSINESS AND MUCH NEEDED INCOME.....TO FEED OUR FAMILIES, PAY OUR BILLS, WORK AND EARN A FAIR AND MODEST INCOME ....

... I WISH THEY WOULD CONSIDER THE DAMAGE THEY HAVE HELPED TO PROMOTE.

THE LAST TIME I CHECKED ..... THE LOCAL GROCERY STORES, DOCTORS OFFICES, DRUG STORES, STATE FARM INSURANCE AGENT, MY HOSPITAL, THE GAS STATION, ETC., ETC.......NONE WERE "GIVING ME" ANYTHING.

JUST THE OPPOSITE; EVERYTHING HAS GONE UP.

WE CANNOT "GIVE IT AWAY".

WE WILL NOT GIVE IT AWAY.

IF WE CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO MAKE NEW ITEMS, DUE TO THESE TYPES OF BUSINESS PRACTICES ( which cost us ALL money ) THEN WE WILL HAVE TO STOP MANUFACTURING NEW PRODUCT.

IT'S JUST THAT SIMPLE.

I WELCOME ANY REASONABLE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS.

THANK YOU AS ALWAYS FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

I think we're incredibly fortunate to have TSSD doing such fantastic new product. I'm happy to pay the postage and would even pay an extra 'handling' fee if it was the difference between him being able to continue or not. I guess those who offer free postage are trying to make their money back through volume, and there's probably a benefit in claiming the expense as a tax deduction but I am aware of cases where the undercutting simply hurts everybody. I've posted this here in the plastic section because I think the set up to produce plastic product is so different to that for metals.

Add ten dollars to the cost of every order and promote it as 'postage free'! I once looked at a second hand car that the owner was trying to sell with the inducment of a free return flight to Fiji...or you could have just the car, minus the cost of the ticket!

I completely understand where Nick from TSSD is coming from relative to the postage issue. It cost big bucks to produce the plastic sets he does.
HOWEVER, I was thinking of buying his plastic Roman figures so I did a little comparison shopping and it turned out I could buy just what I wanted right here at Treefrogs for a cheaper price than buying directly from Nick, that due to the fact TF does not charge postage whereas Nick would have charged $12 more for his postage.
Something seems out of kilter when a dealer can sell cheaper than the manufacterer!
End of story here is that I will be buying those Romans from Nick, but I will get them at OTSN. I do like to support what he (Nick) is doing in producing plastic figures.

I think that is a good way to go about it. I guess the big dealers can get by on a slimmer margin (and increased postage costs) because they have so many lines. It does put pressure on a business like Nick's though.

And Jack and Wayne make an appearance in the Plastics forum - who'd of thought we'd live to see such days!

If I could paint, I would live on this thread.

I never expect free shipping, it's like expecting the manufacturer/dealer to cover the taxes. My dealer charges for shipping but offers a discount off the product. Treefrog offers free shipping but there prices are RRP and (for me at least) you have to spend $250 to receive it.

You have to shop around and choose what methods suit you the best.

Nick and Deanna put at least $15,000 UP FRONT, the better part of a year to make a single run of a new figure set. Not counting sculpting costs. One product.
A dealer can carry hundreds of products at wholesale for the same investment, making it a bit easier to offer free shipping on large orders . I suppose shipping could be included in the cost of doing business deductions.

It is our Policy to supply the best and fastest shipping/postage that is available using standard Royal Mail or Parcel Force services. If we ship by Courier, it is to be at the Customers cost. Whenever possible, we ship the same day as we receive payment.
It is the Customers responsibility to inform us if they want to add insurance to the standard cost of delivery: All prices that we quote are for standard delivery, and we are not responsible for goods lost by the above Services. We do keep strict records of when and where items were posted from and retain Proof of Postings for all items. We will always endeavour to seek compensation on behalf of our Customers, but cannot be held responsible for any losses occurred.

"Nick and Deanna put at least $15,000 UP FRONT"

Thanks for that, I've always been curious about such things. When I looked at doing it myself and it was 10 years ago, it was less but I think my Chinese manufacturer was of the 'cheap and nasty' variety. Conte continually talks about it being $100,000 but he does a lot of poses and I think did them in Canada to start with? Sculpting of figures could be $3 - 500 a piece. I think I'll start a thread to see how much running a line would come to.

Nick has added this two days ago.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 10th:

THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE MANY, MANY RESPONSES WE HAVE RECEIVED REGARDING THIS ISSUE.

AS I SUSPECTED WOULD HAPPEN, 100% OF THE RESPONSES SO FAR HAVE AGREED WITH MY COMMENTS.

REASONABLE RESPONSE BY REASONABLE MEN.

YES, THERE IS "WIGGLE ROOM" IN NEARLY ANY "RETAIL" BUSINESS.

TSSD HAS CERTAINLY OFFERED SOME FORMS OF DISCOUNTS OVER THE YEARS.

BUT "SHIPPING COSTS" ARE A VERY REAL, AND EXPENSIVE PART OF THIS BUSINESS.

PERSONALLY, I HATE SHIPPING, I HATE SHIPPING COSTS, AND I HATE BEING AT THE MERCY OF OTHERS WHEN IT COMES TO PRICING.

MAYBE I SHOULDN'T COMPLAIN. SHIPPING COSTS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD ARE INSANE !!!!

I pretty much noted the same in that most of the "usual" dealers charge for shipping. So who is offering all this Free Shipping ?

I followed this thread when it started and it suggested a question I didn't ask at the time.

Today I received an email from the US offering a product I was interested in (non Toy soldier but ACW related) at a sale price and free shipping . Of course free shipping was NOT available to International customers . OK . I started the purchase process and a $19.99 item had a $21.00 shipping cost . I did not complete the order . My question is "If a vendor offers free shipping in the US why not at least reduce the international cost of shipping by an amount roughly equal to US shipping costs ? I know USPS is relatively cheap but it is not free . (However another recent post stated that the USPS lost $15 billlion last year ( so maybe I am wrong about the free part )

Just asking , please see emphasis

Humbly yours
Kirk
