No Grognard,

Try again ! :)

My soldiers sang my death.

I was killed in Italy.

Have to agree - Joachim Murat - "The Dandy King" - King of Naples

valmy33,

Joachim Murat was executed in Italy.

Raymond.

Murat seems to be the answer in that case but I could not find any link between him and the current mayor of Labastide-Murat (Lucien-Georges Foissac)...

Hi guys,

You think to Murat; Yes he was marshall and you can find two towns in France with his name : Murat (Cantal) and La Bastide Murat (Lot) where he was born but you're wrong and I'm sorry that.

Informations :

I was kill in Italy but it's possible that Murat read my story, sang my song and knew my exploits cos I conquered the kingdom of Naples for a king.

Faithfully

In that case it's Jacques II de Chabannes de La Palice...

Great question. Have had to admit defeat and go wiki :( and am learning a lot about Marshals of France! Napoleons last Marshal - Marmont -died in Venice in 1852.

As of now, I know of two Marshals of France that died in Italy:

Joachim Murat and Jacques de la Palice

Perhaps valmy33 may confirm the answer soon.

Raymond.

There are actually more than 2 French marshals who died in Italy. For example Charles II d'Amboise de Chaumont is another one. As I indicated below the answer should be Jacques II de Chabannes de La Palice since Valmy said that the current mayor of the town that bears his name is his direct descendant. The current mayor de Lapalisse is indeed Jacques de Chabannes...

I think we have a winner! Well done indeed. There si also the song

His epitaph reads[1]
Ci gît Monsieur de La Palice: Si il' n'était pas mort, il ferait encore envie. ("Here lies Sir de la Palice: If he weren't dead, he would still be envied.")

These words were misread (accidentally or intentionally) as "...il serait encore en vie" ("...he would still be alive"). In the 16th century this misreading was incorporated into a popular satirical song, and in time many other variants developed, like
... que deux jours avant sa mort / il était encore en vie. ("... that two days before his death / he was still quite alive".) ... et quand il était tout nu, / il n'avait point de chemise. ("... and when he was stark naked, / he didn't wear a shirt").
In the early 18th century Bernard de la Monnoye collected over 50 of these humorous "la Palice" quatrains, and published them as a burlesque Song of la Palice. From that song came the French term lapalissade meaning an utterly obvious truth—i.e. a truism or tautology.
