Just saw two related movies on the above in close succession - "Battle of Algiers" and "Lost Command".
The first was a very gritty docu-drama and the second was about a fictional French Officer (Anthony Quinn) who lost his morality fighting the war in Algeria. The latter also starred Alain Delon and George Segal. Both were and are still terrific movies!
Planning to watch "The Day of the Jackal" starring Edward Fox to complete my trilogy of this topic.

I saw Battle of Algiers a few months ago and loved it. I reviewed it in my Watch List Thread.

I know. I picked up on your thread to get these long forgotten movies.

Both really good movies, as is DotJ. Lost Command is based on Guy Larteguy's book 'The Centurions'. Well worth reading. If the topic interests you, find a copy of Alistair Horne's 'A Savage War of Peace', a good book on the French and Algerian war. -- Al

What I liked about the movie and what was vivid was how it was filmed in newsreel style.

The " Battle of Algiers"(" La battaglia di Algeri"), is an italian film directed by Gillo Pontecorvo. The algerian authorities gave the places to film because of the good algerian-italian relations of those years.

The film was forbidden in France till 1971.

I just re-watched the Battle of Algiers. Repeated watchings make it more compelling as the quest for freedom, for independence, cannot be denied.

Simply a classic.

Had to revive this thread to add another movie to the one's mentioned. Caught it off Netflix and it it titled "Intimate Enemies". It is French, dubbed in English, and is well worth watching. A very interesting story of a French Lieutenant leading his platoon in the Algerian hills of enemy territory and the effect the war and the way it is fought effects him and his men. I very much liked this film. -- Al

Sorry, meant to say 'subtitled', not dubbed. -- Al
