In the next installment of "What's New with the Upgrade" we'll discuss friends and contacts versus the old 'buddy' system.
Before the upgrade the buddy list was used to keep track of the friends you have made on this forum. You could access your buddy list to see which of your friends were currently online and send them a private message. Adding people to your buddy list also allowed you to send private messages to multiple forum members at the same time.
Buddies are now out and friends and contacts are in. Actually buddies have been replaced by contacts. Your buddy list was always your own private list of people on the forum you wanted to keep track of but no one ever knew if they were on your buddy list, it was one-sided. You can still keep track of people by adding them to your contact list and if you had a buddy list before the upgrade all the names were put on your contact list.
So where does the friend list come in?
A friendship is a mutual, two-way relationship between two users. It is initiated by one user and accepted by the other and your friends are listed on your profile page so friendships are public.
What's the point of contacts and friends?
Well, the main use of this new system is with personal photo albums. When you make a photo album you choose if you want to make it public or private. If it's public anyone can view it. If it's private only the people on your friends and contacts list (and staff) can see it.
