In the next installment of "What's New with the Upgrade" we'll discuss friends and contacts versus the old 'buddy' system.

Before the upgrade the buddy list was used to keep track of the friends you have made on this forum. You could access your buddy list to see which of your friends were currently online and send them a private message. Adding people to your buddy list also allowed you to send private messages to multiple forum members at the same time.

Buddies are now out and friends and contacts are in. Actually buddies have been replaced by contacts. Your buddy list was always your own private list of people on the forum you wanted to keep track of but no one ever knew if they were on your buddy list, it was one-sided. You can still keep track of people by adding them to your contact list and if you had a buddy list before the upgrade all the names were put on your contact list.

So where does the friend list come in?
A friendship is a mutual, two-way relationship between two users. It is initiated by one user and accepted by the other and your friends are listed on your profile page so friendships are public.

What's the point of contacts and friends?
Well, the main use of this new system is with personal photo albums. When you make a photo album you choose if you want to make it public or private. If it's public anyone can view it. If it's private only the people on your friends and contacts list (and staff) can see it.

Where is list of friends and contacts displayed?
Your friends and contacts are displayed on the 'Contacts and Friends' page in your User CP. Your friends are also displayed in your profile page.
How can I request a friend, accept a friend or break a friendship?
There are two ways to request a friendship with someone.
The easiest way is to view the profile page of the person you want to become friends with and click the 'Befriend' link.
The other way is to add the person to your contacts first. Then from your 'Contacts and Friends' page ask to be their friend by checking the box next to their name labelled 'Friend'. Next, save the page.
If you know the username of the person you want to be friends with you can send a friend request using the box provided and clicking 'Add Friend'.
To accept a friend, go to your 'Contacts and Friends' page. At the bottom of the page you will see a list of pending requests. Check the box for the requests you wish to accept then check the 'Accept' button and save the changes. If you do not wish to be friends then select 'Reject' instead.
Although this part sounds more geared to pre-adolescent girls, at some point you may decide you want to break a friendship.
Breaking a friendship can be done in three ways.
  • From your 'Contacts and Friends' page, uncheck the box for friend for the particular person and save the changes. If you no longer wish them to be a contact either, uncheck both boxes for that person.
  • In your 'Profile Page', click 'Friends' and then click 'Break Friendship' next to the user's name.
  • In the other person's profile, click 'Friends' then find your username and click 'Break Friendship'.

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for all the good information. I am finding it very helpful!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

If someone sends a friendship invitation and the other person accepts does the 2nd person need to send another invitation back? Or just the first one work both ways?

If you send a friendship invitation to someone and they accept, you are automatically listed as their friend as well since you initiated it.

Please be advised fellow forum members:

All future requests for friendship with Caesar will require a mandatory offering of tribute in the form of KC, East of India or Forces of Valor products. In lieu of that tribute, Caesar will accept generous monetary donations to the Treasury of TreeFrog Treasures in the name of Caesar and in the form of gift certificates for future acquisitions for the Legions and further conquests. :D:p:D

To those of you who offer St. Petersburg Spartans or Romans, you will be immediately elevated to the title of Currahee Legate :D

To all of you who have extened hands in friendship, I am really really touched by it and hope to live up to the title.

Yours very truly,
CC

Hey Chris,
I tried to leave a visitor's message for you regarding SWI books, but couldn't do it. I reckoned it was because;

a) I'm stupid
b) I keep loosing the wireless connection on this rustbucket where I'm stuck (just until Friday H, just until Friday H....:):))
c) some combination of a) and b) above

Now I know the truth - its cos I haven't paid the tribute.
Will a bunch of grapes be acceptable..??
:D:D:D

Will PM the book titles while I try and figure out what I'm doing wrong with the visitor's messages function.

Cheers
H
