Not starting another piece. Just refurbishing this. A nice oriental set obtained from Braune and with a few Wilken figures added.

I had made this about 10 years ago. The sides were simply painted black. On retrospect, I think it would probably look better if I added mirrors to the sides to create an impression of a large interior. Mirrors cut to the right size are a little tricky so I have opted for silvered mirror paper which are easier to handle.

So here's the piece as it was hanging on the wall before I start the refurbishment.

This will be nice to see one being revamped.

Can you then take a pic from the same direction as the original picture, so I can see more details of the figures?



On one of our European journeys 10 years ago we spent a lot of time seeking out paintings from the orientalist movement and saw many wonderful works in galleries in the cities, like Paris, London and Istanbul .... fantastic

I carefully prised open the box from the frame. Then I cut two side shiny card pieces to fit onto the edges.

I realised that I am missing a sitting boy figure so I am sculpting a piece to represent him.

I added a thin wire to represent a stick. Some minor cleanup and this figure can be painted.

I replaced the thick wire with a thinner wire. Then I made minor resculpts. The piece is now ready for painting.

A first coat of paint and then I'll rectify any errors.

Finally, I've completed this. The figures and parts were reassembled and I added a thin frame to mask off the edges.
The glass sides certainly make the scene roomier and brighter.

What's next? Well, Orientalism has many attractive facets and great paintings - Odalisques, harems, exotica, more odalisques etc in that order.
