I came across this story this morning and it's fascinating. In a nutshell, after the battle a body was found on the field with no identification, no regimental markings, nothing save an ambrotype of three children. The picture and the search to find the family of this unidentified slain warrior was a big story at the time.

Filmaker Errol Morris came across the story and in a five part series that appeared in the New York Times earlier this year chronicled his story and that of the author who wrote Amos Humiston's story, Mark Dunkelman. The name of the book is Gettysburg’s Unknown Soldier: The Life, Death, and Celebrity of Amos Humiston.
