I was at Gettysburg this past weekend and visited several shops. I was wondering what others thought about the shops at Gettysburg? I prefer the Antique Center of Gettysburg. I was wondering what everyone else thought? I believe Combat lives there ...so what do you think?

The Antique Center of Gettysburg used to be the best kept secret in the hobby, they had loads of retired items available at old retail up until about a year ago; the word got out and that was that.

That said, the shops there are nice. There used to be a hobby shop across from the wax museum that stocked the old K & L 20mm metal range of figures, I bought loads of them when I visited Gettsyburg when I was ten years old. I also bought PAINTED sets of the old 20mm Confederals from a now defuct company called Der Kreigspielers that were sold in the wax museum.

When I made a return visit to Gettysburg several years ago, the wax museum had a huge glass case in the front of the store filled with painted 25mm Dixon ACW figures; I dropped about 500.00 on them, they are beautifully painted.

Great memories of a great place to visit.

The Antique Center has the most variety in metal figures, but expect to pay list or greater..Gettysburg Toy Soldier has the most variety in plastic figures, but has a fair amount of metal..The owner, John, is a great guy and knows his soldier stuff...Michael

I prefer The Antique Center of Gettysburg as well. They have many WW2 items that are impossible to find anywhere else.

That's the truth, probably because they have no website. I used to drive all the way there (1 hour) everytime I had an extra hundred bucks just to get certain retired sets at retail. Picked up the deuce and half then the jagdpanther there long after they were selling for $200+ on ebay. I never had enough money to buy extras though to turn a profit, but at least I have the pieces in my collection. But yeah that seems to be over with now. I used to hate seeing the whistle get blown on that place on here from time to time haha but it was only a matter of time.

expect to pay list or greater............... what are you talking about????? I have found many retired items at list price. John at Gettysburg Toy Soldier sold me several items when I first started collecting and told me boxes for the sets was not important. No boxes, missing figures and chipped paint ...Bad experience with Gettysburg Toy Soldier would not recommend.

Cody,
At least you were able to get retired sets at fair prices for a while before the roof caved in and you weren't one of the ones who ruined it for everyone else; I guess once the word got out about their stock and "collectors" were going in there and cleaning them out on retired sets, they got wise to the situation and started raising their prices on the retired sets.

Whenever a customer would come to me looking for retired sets, I'd always send them to the antique center until one of them called me and said they wanted high prices for retired sets; that was the end of that.

I dont know - what sets you guys think are "overpriced" ?

I was in there on Saturday and there are many K&C WWII figures and Vehicles still at original retail price. Also still several K&C AWI and Old Civil War - as well as Britains still available.

There are three shops that I frequent in GB. The Antique Center is the largest and carries just about everything including Figarti, Collectors Showcase, John Jenkins, KC etc. They do increase the price of a set if they get wind that demand is on the rise. In fact, they just cross out the original price and write in a new one by hand. I've noticed that with several retired JJ sets. This does tend to be the exception and I assume it occurs if they start getting a lot of inquiries. With competition from other local shops on KC products it does not happen as much with those. As I've said before, I have mixed feeling about that since there are few bargains offered when figures are not moving - but it is otherwise a free market and many of these figures are going for higher prices on ebay.

John's shop and Tarbox Toys are nice, small shops (both on Steinwehr) where you can talk toy soldiers. Both John and Charlie are good guys. They carry mostly KC. Charlie carries some Russian figures - from Grenda Studios I believe. John carries a few Aeroart figures. One downside is that, in order to save on shipping, these guys don't always get the most current KC releases as soon as the Antique Center. So if you're dying to get the latest from KC - the AC is usually the best bet. You may also find some shops that sell a few toy soldiers at random. There is a place at the corner of Baltimore and Steinwehr that sells civil war sets. I didn't recognize the manufacturer. Most of these tend to be cheap, lower quality figures for the tourists.

Combat

I was surprized on Saturday that John had the new K&C Russians and the new K&C WW1 Armor Car and ACOG did not ? Interesting.

You are a very lucky man to live so close to each of these stores. I do enjoy having a cigar and driving up to talk with them and of course - buy some Toy Soldiers.

OK, I gotta ask. Where is this Antique center located?? I thought I knew my way around the borough but have no idea where this place is

BTW Is the April 26th show worth going to?

From everything that I hear - the April Show is going to be a big event.

The ACOG is across from the Union Cigar Shop.

30 Baltimore Street. They also have a great Elvis bust - a real steal.
