I am looking to put a glass frame similar to the image over my display board to keep the figures protected and to keep dust off of my diorama.

I just wondered if anyone could suggest cheap ways of doing this as my display board is fairly big roughly 80 cm x 60 cm and would need to be around 25-30 cm tall. Looking on the internet it seems this is going to cost several hundred pounds, which is way out of my budget.

Any ideas gratefully received.

You might want to consider Plexiglass (or whatever its equivalent is called overseas). It's strong enough, and you could have panes cut to your specifications and glued up. I've seen display cases like the one in your picture, made without framing, made of Plexiglass. It can be used in a case with framing, too, though that would add to the cost of the cabinet.

It's also lighter in weight than an equivalent piece of glass.

Prosit!

Not checked re viability, but perhaps an upside down glass fish tank? Be a bit on the heavy side and I'm not sure about the sizing, but it would cost a lot less than the custom made ones.

I'd remove the fish first mind. :)

This is NOT as silly as it first sounds.........not a glass, but an acrylic version and a lot cheaper than several hundred pounds.

I wasn't being silly this time Jeff, honest!
It was one of my few genuine suggestions - I appreciate they don't come along very often.
Apart from the fish. That was silly. And true to form. :p

Honest Guv! I wasn’t insinuating that you was silly, cos that would have been silly in it’s self and we all know where silliness leads to.:p:D:D

Going back to the original suggestion, there is a wide selection of really good Acrylic tanks available, I suggest a trip to the local garden centre or such like.

Eminently sensible suggestion.
I've done exactly that. Even took the fish out too.

Mind you had trouble keeping the water and shingle in!!!

My friend has done that and it works quite well. I am not sure though whether it allows the toy soldiers to breathe. There was that story especially with the old leads about lack of movement of air encouraging oxidation of teh lead. That is why an old fashioned curio cabinet is better, as there is some air movement in that.

I have used "fish tanks" for years for my plastic/resin and wood ship models. They look good. BUT try to invest a few extra $$$ for the upper end fish tanks, as the cheap one with the real wide sides take away from the display.

A lot of time you can find fish tanks on Craig's list or in the local swap pages of the new papers. Folks just want to get rid to the stuff real cheep!

It you have an craft store like AC Moore / Michaels they sell a huge selection of display cases from very small to really large. And they are generally fairly inexpensive.

Making them is actually pretty easy and you can make it to fit just about any space.
