I am flying into Austin to drive to Corpus Christie then up to Houston along the coast then back again next week. Looking for areas we want to move to.
We had planned on stopping for a quick look at the Alamo and I had planned on toy store near there but they are closed on Sundays.. Then grab some dinner on the riverwalk. then the drive to Corpus.

I was just going to grab any hotel that has good reviews but if anyone knows of somewhere that is a must stay at in Corpus? Anything I should avoid ?

Chuck...

I live on Galveston, Island...
35 miles from Houston...
last time I was in Corpus I was 16 years old...
can't help you there...

now San Antonio I know a little better...

and someone knowledgeable told me that the old K&C KingsX Toy Soldier store...
in the Menger Hotel...literally across the street from the Alamo...
has re-opened...
under a different name and different owner and is in business again...

and if you stay in San Antonio and visit the Riverwalk...
the Menger is a fantastic hotel and just 3 blocks from the river...
I have stayed there dozens of times...
a first class operation that hosted the Texas Toy Soldier Show for years...

Thanks Mike,

I meant the store was closed on the Sunday. I may try to get to it on the way back Wednesday for my flight the next day.
I don't think we will stay in San Antonio over night. The goal is to explore the coastal towns as much as possible.

Chuck...

you're gonna drive right by my house...
if Covid wasn't prevalent...
I would invite you for a beer and a shrimp p-boy...
enjoy your trip...

If you do stay in San Antonio (this trip or another) I highly recommend The Hotel Valencia on the Riverwalk.

If you stay in Austin (this trip or another) I highly recommend The Four Seasons.

The restaurant in The Four Seasons is incredible. Ciclo has fantastic appetizers and great main courses.

Yeah, the Hotel Valencia is NICE.

The Menger is cool because of location and history.

Eats on the River walk...well not Tex-Mex but Peasanos is awesome. The shrimp paesano is amazing. Home Grown Chain. For some smacking Fajitas I like La Margarita at the Market Square. Thats a Mike Miller, ZB Lang, Julie, John from Texas, Tom approved joint.

In Corpus a customer of mine is building new sip wall concrete houses as a new construction project to save residences from hurricane damage. Type in Wes Vollmer and you'll find him. He's a character.

Austin-Pappadeaux or Pappasito's period. The butter sauce for the shrimp brochette at Pappasitos is so good Mike Miller said he would dip it my big toe in and let it rip.

If you need a snack along the way on the highways...BUCEES. You can't miss it. Great jerky, snacks and freaking HUGE gas station.

There is a Hilton in Corpus...I think. In Corpus try Rudy's BBQ and get the "lean" brisket...oh my gawd heaven.

John from Texas

Thanks John,

This is the 3rd flight we have booked for this trip and it looks like we actually may be able to get there this time. ( no cancel no cancel no cancel) La margarita menu looks like it is right up my alley. I will pass on any sauce that has your toe in though. I'm sure it's nice toe but still. I saw the Hilton and was leaning towards that but I was wondering if a hotel on Mustang island would have a nicer view. Thanks guys for all the input.

Chuck...

like John said...La Margarita is the bomb...

it's in the Mercado downtown...you take a trolley to it...or can walk...about 10-15 blocks from the Menger...a little open air strip center with stores and vendors selling mostly Mexican/Texican novelty items and vendor food stands...it's a trendy fun place that draws a huge crowd...especially in the summertime...

at La Margarita...the cabrito (kid goat) is the best...soooooooooo tender...can't go wrong with the fajitas or shrimp either...not too pricey...great atmosphere...mariachi bands walk the dining room...mostly an adult crowd...always safe with security (San Antonio police) at the door...in the summertime you need to call for reservations...and of course...you have to get a Margarita or two...

they have a "sister restaurant"...right next door to it...same owners I believe...called Mi Tierra...more of a family place...extremely well run...they serve breakfast too...I always hit it on the way out of town...I recommend ordering "migas"...I don't think it's on the menu...but they always make it for me when I ask...scrambled eggs with corn chips...ask them to scramble some "pico de gallo" in it...side of refried beans, little fried potatos...flour tortillas...it's a winner...

Mi Tierra also has a Panaderia (bakery) on the premises...Mexican pastries...sweet breads...cookies...bunuelos...empanadas...churros...etc...all good...but you gotta get at least one of their pralines...they put 1/2 cup of pecans in each one...they put Aunt Sally's pralines in New Orleans to shame...

can't miss with these 2 places...I gotta quit talking and make me some breakfast...I'm getting hungry talking about it...^&grin

Needless to say, wherever you go in Texas you will find fantastic food!

I’ll leave the nuances to John and Mike, but from the people to the food to the history Texas is simply a fantastic state.

Looks like we are going to the trip in a reverse order. Galveston tonight then corpus Christie then Santa Antonio with a stay at the Valencia then Austin.

I drove from Austin to Houston to Galveston to Surfside beach and then the back roads to Corpus Christie then back up to Austin.

Someone should have sang a song about Galveston. Nice area

And NOWHERE IN THE STATE can a venue for a soldier show be found or where Kings X is now

I have always liked this song...
Texas...by Chris Rea...an English blues and rock singer...
it's got that simple "clippity clop" beat of horses hooves throughout it combined with a slide rock guitar...
and his voice is deep and often referred to as "gravel like"...

While not as iconic as “Galveston”, and I’ll show my age with this, but this song really sums up traveling through Texas:

Jason...
I loved the song by Gorillaz..."Clint Eastwood"...and bought this CD when it came out in 2001...
the cashier was some young teenage girl and she looked at me in disbelief and asked if it was for me...
I was about 45 at the time...and it was the first time that I realized I was getting old in the eyes of women...:redface2:
still love the song...
lyrics a little randy...

Mike:

Gorillaz songs and lyrics pretty much transcend age, plus they make great music when it comes to driving!
