A mid-April afternoon in 1757 will be proven to be a great day for toy soldier collectors. On that day, Colonel George Monro arrived to take over command of Fort William Henry. It had previously been commanded by Major Willaim Eyre of our beloved 44th Regiment. The previous March, Eyre beat off a winter attack on Fort William Henry by a mix of French regulars, French Militia and Indians - a force of some 1,600. Because of the relatively small size of Fort William Henry, only about half the 44th had wintered there under Eyre. The other half of the 44th had been stationed further south. Besides the 44th, 2 ranger companies paid directly by the British Army (not colonials) had wintered over at Fort William Henry.
On that April day, Monro arrived leading two companies of the 35th, 2 new companies of the 44th, 1 company of the Fraser's Highanders, and 2 companies of the 48th (Relief is Greatly Wanted by Dodge, page 52). Eyre and his regulars departed.
So if you are looking for an rational to mix nearly most your JJD FIW stuff into one big pot, here is the rational - no fibbing, promise !!!
