Sure we all know the movies - Northwest Passage, Last of the Mohicans, Drums Along The Mohawk, Unconquered - mostly based on great books - but does anyone have any other recommendations on French and Indian War books, fiction or non? I have a fairly decent collection but I'm always looking for more good reads. If anyone hasn't read it I would highly recommend Savage Wilderness by Harold Coyle and Thunder in the East by Mike Roarke. Savage Wilderness has a brilliant description of the Battle of Monongahela. Lots of action and brilliant detail in the characters, arms, battles etc. Any ideas? Cheers

The Wilderness Empire by Allan W Eckert gives a very detailed account of William Johnson and the Iroquois nation during the French and Indian war. I found this book to be very fascinating.

Any JJ collector should have:

Empires Collide: The French and Indian War 1754-63 from Osprey Publishing. Great artwork.

Crucible of War by Fred Anderson

Battle on Snowshoes by Bob Bearor

I read "Empires Collide" and highly recommend it. I also read a recently published book called, "The French & Indian War" by Walter R Borneman and that was another good one.

Here is a new one I highly recommend:

Pennsylvania's Forbes Trail: Gateways and Getaways along the Legendary Route from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (Paperback)

It has wonderful illustrations.

King's Man

I read White Devil which was good and There's Braddock at the Monongahela,A Few Acres of Snow which spans the wars from 1680's until the British Conquest, there is a series of books by Bob Bearer called Leading by Example which puts names to those excellent French Marine officers who were mostly Canadian by birth.I also have many books I haven't read yet but are suppose to be very good. And lets not forget the Parkman books.

I also have both books of Robert Griffing's art.Well worth the price.

Did anyone know that Bob Bearer put out a video of the Battle On Snowshoes?
www.mindlabfilms.com/bos.htm. Looks interesting from the clip they show. Seems in line with When The Forest Ran Red and the PBS documentary War That Made America. Northwest Passage by Kenneth Roberts is of course brilliant and Arrogant Armies by James M. Perry has a great chapter on Braddock at Monongahela.

I have that video and I converted it to DVD.There is also another DVD,a companion to when the Forest Ran Red. called George Washington's First War.

Is the video worth buying. I've read quite a it on the battle but I'd like to see it in video form if it's worth it? Cheers

I'd recommend The Annotated and Illustrated Journals of Major Robert Rogers, Purple Mountain Press and The History of Rogers' Rangers, Volume 4, The St. Francis Raid, Heritage Books. Good stuff!

Anyone have reviews on the Alan Eckert books? Wilderness Empire is one of the titles I believe. I can't say enough about Harold Coyle's Savage Wilderness - though the title sounds like a romance novel, the book covers every major engagement and the battle descriptions are vivid. Like you were right there. Starts at Culloden, goes to Monongahela, Ticonderoga etc. Accurate and brilliantly written from the perspective of an indian warrior, french artillery officer, british line officer and a provincial. Fictional characters married with fact. Amazing read, I've read it twice already. I warn you though if you read it you will start a thread asking for Ticonderoga figures from Jenkins... guaranteed. Cheers.

Michael, I read Savage Wilderness a while ago. I thought it was okay. "Wilderness Empire" by Eckert blows every other book on the whole scope of the F&I War away. Its listed as an historical novel but you'll learn more about the war than reading any history book. Its mostly throught the eyes of Johnson and his Iroquois comrades. It's a great read and I can't recommend it enough. Eckert's next book was on the American Revolution, then a book on the era of Pontiacs revolt, then Simon Keaton, thru the Blackhawk Wars, etc. His works were a series of books, following the American frontier westward, but he passed away before completing the series..... Read any of them, you won't be sorry....

Besides the titles already cited, I'd recommend "Century of Conflict," by Joseph Lister Rutledge, "1759. The Battle for Canada," by Laurier L. LaPierre, "Betrayals. Fort William Henry & the "Massacre," by Ian K. Steele, and "The Siege and the Battle . Quebec 1759," by C.P. Stacey.

Savage Empire is the first book that I read about the F&I war and after reading it I was hooked. I actually found it in a bargain bid at a Media Play store. Ssorc1 is right after reading that book I was fascinated with the 1758 battle of Ticonderoga. After that I read Wilderness Empire and that book blew my mind with all the detail.
