"Armored Thunderbolt, the US Army Sherman in World War II", by Steven Zaloga, Stackpole books, 2008, 360 pages, hardcover.
Gary's pushing ANOTHER Sherman tank book? Yes he sure is! This is an excellent history of the Sherman tank and its use in WW2. This is not another catalog of Sherman tank versions with specs, etc, although there IS a lot of good technical information in this book. Here is a MILITARY history of the Sherman, looking at the weapon and how it fit into the US Army's system. The Sherman has had its share of controversy and this book helps separate facts from legends. Zaloga combed archives for original reports and studies from US, British and German sources, combined with veterans' interviews and material from period histories. What was the mechanical lineage of the Sherman? Why was it designed the way it was? Who made the important decisions in US tank production? Why didn't the Sherman get a high velocity gun sooner? How did the Sherman fit into the "American Blizkrieg"? Why did the Panther win the tank statistics but the Sherman win the war? The answers are here along with a lot more information. This volume is well illustrated and quite readable. "Armored Thunderbolt" is now required reading for posting in our discussions on the pros and cons of the Sherman ;-)
I pre-ordered mine from Amazon.com and got free postage. At the current price I think it's a steal (less than a single K&C figure at current prices in the US)
