This Hiriart set 1205 Grenadiers & Pioneers is on my 2014 order list for Mike Tarantino. I was excited to find it since I have always admired this plate from Robert & Christopher Latham-Wilkonson's Infantry Uniforms Book Two 1855-1939. I especially like the Victorian Era Slade-Wallace 1888 pattern equipment. The pioneers in the front row are carrying picks and shovels. The pioneers usually wore beards so I may ask for this modification.

It is a great looking set, Randy, I hope you will enjoy it. I noticed that the figure on the left in your colour plate has a beard while the one on the right does not.

If you send them the plate Randy - why not ask for the pioneer badge shown on the right arm - and maybe also the Service inverted chevrons on the left arm cuffs at the same time? They are just a small dash or two of white paint - but would make a lovely variation difference to the end product - which are very nice anyhow, by the way - as usual from this company. jb

Hi Mike

Re: Beards

From the Wilkinson-Latham Book

Historical Notes:

"It had been the custom in the Army for pioneers to wear beards. At the time of the illustration pioneers were directed by Queen's Regulations to do so if able."

Do you think Hiriart would need to modify the face for a beard or just paint it? I think I would have some with and others without?

Excellent idea--thank you for the suggestion. I'll have Mike pass it along to them.

"If Able" are key words. Maybe some weren't able - due perhaps to youth or other - possibly, medical reasons. The reason pioneers were given this direction (to cease shaving) in the first place, was a practical one - and down to one of their roles. Part of their job was to use a forge ( i.e Blacksmithing) - and the beard afforded some facial protection from prolonged exposure to the intense heat from the fire when working metal.

Should be a simple enough head transplant to substitute one with a cast in beard, I would have thought - though I don't do casting - or know what Hiriart might have available. Should look great - if they can do a couple. jb

Hi Randy,

I suspect it would be easier to paint the beards rather than sculpt them especially since they have chinstraps. I can't think of any other bearskin heads with beards that Hiriart has on any other set, so swaping heads may not be an option.

Mike.
