Every time I see one of these type articles I can't help but having my mind conjure up what it must have been like at that fateful moment.
70 years is a long time to bring a hero home!

It was a similar effort that found the wreckage of a P-61 on a mountaintop in New Guinea. That airframe was recovered, and is undergoing restoration at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum outside of Reading PA. The museum just kicked off an online donation campaign through Kickstarter.com.
