44th Orderly Book, the morning of the Battle of Monongahela (Spelling and Grammar as in the Original). The question is when did these guys sleep????

Camp Near Monongahleia July the 8th:1755
The Parole is Burntwood
Field Officer for to Morrow Lieut Col: Burton
For the Genls Guard to Morrow the 44th Regt:

The field Officer and Detacht. of 100 men that Joind the Advance party Monacutha's Camp to be Releivd this Evening And to parade at the Front Gun. Field Officer for the Detacht Lieut Col Gage. The Troops to receive Immedy: Two days Meat & Two days flower which Compleats them with provisions to the Tenth Inclucive. All the men but those who mount the picquet this Night to draw their pieces and to Load with frish cartridges to morrow at Genl Beating And the Commandg: Officers will be Answerable to the Genl for any firing without Applycation. The Company of Grends: of the 44th & 48th Regts: to parade to Morrow Morning At Two oClock at the head of their respective Collours And to March from thence to the Advance party And there put themselves under the Command of Lt Col Gage. The Men Are to be Compleated with 24 Rounds of powder & ball And Are to take their napsacks & Haversacks but Are to leave their Tents behind. The Grends: to March Compleat with Offrs & 70 Rank & File. The Officers not to take their Baggage but to leave it in Charge with the Qr Masters of their respective Regts. The Genl. to beat to Morrow Morning 4 oClock the Assembly at 5 And the Troops to March - Immediatly after.

Camp 6 Miles of this Side Guests July ye 12th: 1755 (Guest = Gist Plantation)
The Troops to parade this Evening At Retreat beating Att the Head of their Respective Regts & Companys with their Arms & Accoutriments. The Surgons of the Line to gett their several Sick & wounded men put int Waggons this afternoon. They Are to Appy to Mr Scott waggon Master Genl, for wagons that the men Are to go in, And to Conform to the Orders of this Morning Relative to ye men going in them. The Genl to beat to Morrow Morning at 4 oClock, the Assemble at 5 when the Tropps are to March. The Officers fitt for Duty to parade this Evening with their men.

Side Comment: 20.5 embrasures roughed in, 6.5 to go. Mike will understand.

Wrong Yet Again!!! The entry is for the evening before the battle and not the morning of the battle - these are order for the next day.

Ever try to find something in the woods at 2 AM in the morning without a flashlight? Big, dark woods. Never mind organizing a marching column. I guess torches, but still crap load of torches. And at this point Gage was leading, not the wood cutter party, so how ....
