Found this small article while perusing my on-line copy of The Scotsman newspaper. Thought the AWI buffs on here might be able to expand a bit further on the career of Mister Jones. I'd be interested in learning soe more about this particular illustrious fellow-countryman.
UK schools aren't big on teaching us much about AWI.

American naval hero John Paul Jones was born today (6th July) in 1747 at Kirkcudbrightshire on the south-west coast of Scotland. A skilled naval commander, Jones made his mark on history by the capture of the Royal Navy vessel Serapis in 1779, which was one of the earliest victories that the Americans achieved over their British opponents.

Harry, UK schools aren't big on teaching any history, they consider it non PC, a great pity as history teaches us the mistakes of the past and should prevent them from reoccuring. A lesson our politicians would do well to learn.

Aye well, it's been so long since I was at the school that I don't know what they teach in the UK these days.
Knife-fighting seems to be high on the sylabus by all accounts.

Cheers

Harry this is a great book you can pick up on Amazon.Com - I think you will enjoy it. A True American Hero ! :D

Thanks Ron - but it'll likely get Lost In The Post.
Wait a minute though. It's unlikely that Chinese Posties go a bundle on having books about True American Hero's in their cabinets (probably). Maybe I'll order it up right enough.

Cheers

Neither are ours. It's a malaise of our modern society here in the West, I think.

John Paul Jones is a great character to study, and a real hero.

Prost!

Harry

I think the Chi-Coms won't be interested in John Paul Jones - you are safe ! ;)

This book was a big hit in America and was on the bestseller list for a long time. I think you will enjoy it. Really interesting story on how John Paul Jones changed his name / reasons for it and ran away to America to start over again.

Enjoy ! :D

If I remember correctly, he went on to serve in the Russian Navy, and eventually died (of Pneumonia I think) and was buried in Paris, France.

Actually, his grave was originally forgotten, after the French Revolution, but later relocated in 1905, and his remains were removed and returned here, and buried with ceremony and honors in 1906 at the Naval Academy.

Prost!
Bradley
