Happy Highwater mark of the confederacy day!!! I just want to tell you all that it is all my fault, I thought we were invincible. Wow, this is not very fun to celebrate:(

July 3rd: the big "what if?" day. What if . . .

Jackson hadn't been shot by fellow confederate troops and Jackson rather than Pickett led that charge?

Lee listened to Longstreet and chose to abandon the field and maneuver closer to Washington, D.C., forcing the Union forces to attack him on ground of his choosing?

The Union forces had not been satisfied with handing Bobby Lee and the Army of Virginia its first real licking, and had pursued, forcing Lee's surrender?

Yes sir, that is the most crucial day of the war, and neither side fully took advantage. I guess its true what they say, it isn't the side that does the most great things, its the side that makes the fewest mistakes that wins wars.

I don't think it really mattered who led the charge, it would have still been a massacre. But If Jackson had lived he may have prevented it.

But if that had happened they're wouldn't have been a "Pickett's all you can eat buffet" at Gettysburg

I walked once from the Confederate line to the "high water" mark. It takes about 20 minutes of brisk walking with no one shooting at you and no fences to climb over. Imagine what it was like to be under fire the entire way.

I walked up Little Round top. I also had the advantage of a nice path with steps along the way, and it was in October. I can't even imagine what it would have been to have to run up the hill in a wool uniform with 90 plus degree heat, and being shot at from the top !

I hiked along Fugitive's trail from Islandwana to the Buffalo River. It was spring (Sept). I cannot imagine what it must have been like to gallop along there with hordes of blood thirsty Zulus chaisng you all the way and in mid summer.

Your very lucky mate, would love to see Islandawana. One day hopefully.

You should come out Rob. The Natal battlefields route is a well worn one for Britsih tourists. It does contain some of the most disastrous battles in the illustrious history of the British army, Islandwana, Majuba,Colenso and Spion Kop. It is well worth a visit.
