Help in identifying old medals please. (1 Viewer)

Knowing that I'm interested in military history a friend of mine asked me to try and identify medals that had been awarded to a member of his family. I haven't a clue where to start, can anyone help from the photograph I've been given? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That first medal has me stumped ....., but the others are British WW2 Service Medals

L-R : 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, War Medal 1939-45

Maybe someone else can help with the first one ???

Thanks for that, I'm led to believe the pre WW2 medals might be from the Boer War?

Can you get a close up image of that first medal, maybe there are some words that can give us a clue???

Are the strip of medals miniatures? The medal in the box looks full size, so close up of that one could solve it?

It looks like the first medal depicts a seated Britannia, that might help give some direction to searches.

Found it. I did a search on "medal britannia red ribbon", and this image was among the results:

The inscription is "For God And The Empire" and "For Meritorious Service". I'm not an expert on British medals, so I don't know the precise name (yet), but I suspect it's equivalent to our Good Conduct Medal.

That is great work, I thought that it was some sort of award/decoration because it was the first medal in the group and then the campaign medals followed.
