I'm not much of a cat person, but this cat is Hero worthy without qualification.

"A little boy was riding his bicycle in the driveway of his Bakersfield, California, home when he was suddenly
attacked by a neighbor's dog. Luckily, the family cat, Tara, came to the rescue.

The scary encounter was all caught on a two home security cameras and uploaded to YouTube by the boy's father,
who noted the kitty's amazing feat.

'My cat defends my son during a vicious dog attack and runs the dog off before he can do additional damage.
Thankfully, my son is fine!'

The child's mother said he needed a few stitches but is OK otherwise.

BL,

One of my employees came up to me and showed me that vid. I was shocked at not only the dereliction of duty on the neighbors (dog owners) part, but the ferocity of the cats attack on the dog. You really never see cats reacting like that for ANYONE, yet this cat blasted that dog so fast and furiously that I am a little surprised at the cats reaction. Thank God, that cat stepped up because that would have been an awful mauling of a child and taped nonetheless.

Incredible video but I know first hand how tough cats can be, when we lived in New Mexico a stray adopted us, it was a big cat and my wife loves animals like no one I know. We bordered on open desert and this cat regularly brought it kills and set them on the door step, the usual doves, quail, squirrels, lizards and on at least 6 occasions RATTLE SNAKES! generally small as rattlers go, a foot to two and a couple were just babies but nothing gets your attention going to get the paper like a rattlesnake on your door mat! What was really weird we found out after a couple of years is at some point before we met him he had been DECLAWED!
Cats can be seriously tough!

We were a 2 cat and 2 dog house for many years. Now just two dogs.

Without a doubt the two cats were ruling supreme ..... sometimes over me too .{sm2}
I had to think a bit before pushing her off my chair to sit. The four of them grew up together so there was hardly any fighting. The pecking order was established and that was that!

Still I have never seen a cat go after a dog (or person) like that before .. amazing.

Cats are the bomb, we have five of them, all girls, I'm outnumbered here 6-1, which is fine.

I have cats inside and outside.Man do they have a mind of their own.On the dog, does everyone think he should be put down or given a chance?

I am not an animal activist but I do volunteer a bit at the local shelter.

If there is NO past history of aggression from the dog then absolutely a second chance. I always look at the owner and see what the story is there. How did the dog get loose? Leash laws? We only have the boy/cat/mom story but not the other half.

Mark,

Put down. My dad was some sort of dog whisperer (its a Mexican thing...think Cesar Milan) and he spent a lot of time as a young man in the fields as a migrant worker. Dogs were an essential part of the migrant worker life as protectors while everyone slept, defenders against coyotes, rattlesnakes and other creepy crawlers. Dogs also were the beloved by the kids as fellow playmates, loyal companions and were always fed no matter what. Good dogs, no matter what the breed were always faithful, loyal to their master and would defend the hand that fed him even it it meant death.

But, once a dog betrayed that trust by turning on man, let alone a child that dog was taken out back and put down...period. I know it sounds harsh, but that was that old school back then. So, needless to say my old man was very leary of stray dogs, loose dogs and any other dog that was not ours. Because a dog (in his mind) that was just out an about running around had nothing to lose, had no fear or too much of it. In other words, unpredictable or "had rabid in his blood" as he put.

Whether that was real rabid or just plain ole rabid, I don't know but to this day I have the same attitude towards loose dogs and this video proves it. On the other side of that coin, my kids and grandkids can sit, bounce, pull, ride, put make up on, play make believe, take their bone away and all out "love" our dogs anyway...everyday. Sure every situation is different, but when a dog crosses that line (attacking man or in this case a child) they are beyond redemption.

Sorry to be so firm on this subject, but either your going to be a responsible pet owner or not. If you are not and your pooch commits a "crime" then you are responsible for what they do and God forbid they hurt a child or anyone for that matter. If that happens outside your domicile then there is no doubt that you are at fault and either the decision to put him down will be made by the pound or you. I know we love our dawgs, but if one of mine (god forbid again) crossed the line there would be no hesitation on my part to put him down. I know it sounds harsh, but he is a dog not a human.

John:

You are so right.

Do you remember that deep freeze we had here in SA back in December and January? One night when it was about 25 degrees the dog 2 houses down was left in the backyard. The dog barked incessantly and my wife called the police. The cops came and arrested the owner. He was charged with cruelty to animals for leaving the dog out in the cold.

Don't mess with Texas.
