Now, here is another auction, that I was watching, and that ended yesterday, 12 Prussian or Imperial German bandsmen:

As far as I can tell, these are Heyde figures, and they're not in too bad a shape, considering their age and how many sets survived the war (or didn't) and they went for $332. That, I think, is a fair price at auction for these figures.

In the context of my other thread, about the overpriced homecast figures and educating ourselves, I'll file this one away and keep it in mind if I see similar figures up for sale or auction somewhere else.

Prost!

Brad, I checked out your link to the auction and the figures look kinda rough to me. That said, I'm not that familiar with Heyde.

I would be interested to know that if you did have this set would you have them repaired and repainted, just touched up or leave them as they are? The reason I ask is that to my eye their rather painful to look at as they are. :(

Good question, Chuck, you know me well!

I originally bookmarked the auction, because the opening bid was $50, which I considered a reasonable price to pay. I gave up the idea of bidding, though, when some knucklehead starting bidding a couple of days out. My experience is that early bids generally drive up the price. Good for the seller, of course, but bad for us buyers.

But had I bid and won, yes, I would have repainted the figures. You're right, they're rough, like many Heydes we might see at flea markets. For me, their value lies in being a group in a coherent style, and in that, although the original finish shows much wear and age, the figures themselves look relatively intact.

Now, having said that I think the end price is a fair price for such a group of Heyde soldiers, I actually would not have bid that high. I would have bailed around $100. That's because another factor for me is my budget (as it probably is for many of us :D ). $300 is a little much for me to spend on a dozen figures right now.

Prost!

Thanks for the reply Brad. I think that you made a wise choice not to go higher than $100. Like I said in my original post that I'm no expert on Heyde figures, but I know that condition, original box etc. have a lot to do with how much a set is worth. Unfortunately that set didn't have too much going for it.

With a set in such poor condition, to my way of thinking, you really just bidding on the castings.
