Hi all - i'm just new to the forum and thought i'd say hello. I'm Simon and I'm based in Lincoln in the UK.

To date I've been mostly a wargamer but I'm starting to feel the uncontrollable urge to start collecting as well (if only to stop myself spending money on piles of lead that will never get painted!).

I really haven't worked out what I am going to collect yet - but this forum seems like a good place to get a feel for whats going on (its a much bigger world than I had imagined!!). My heart is telling me glossy and traditional but I think i'm going to research a bit first.

I'll probably lurk for a bit while I get a hang of stuff (or in reality to think up reasons to justify to my wife why this new hobby is absolutely essential to our family's well being and future happiness)

ps. if you don't mind i'm going to shamelessly plug my blog (wargaming related) while i'm here my blog

Cheers

Simon

Welcome Simon,
You'll find that there is a great array of matte and glossy toy soldiers to be chosen from, and quite a number of companies.
To me my absolute favourites are Imperial Productions in gloss and First Legion in matte (yes I like matte and gloss). But there are other great figures out there from King and Country, Figarti,John Jenkins, Conte Collectibles, Britains in matte, Trophy, Little Legion, Britains, William Hocker, Fusilier or Tommy Atkins in gloss, and many others. And Russian like Connoisseur figures (First Legion is creating a quality/price revolution here...). I just love to discuss figures. Ultimately it'll be your choice, your personal taste and interest in historical periods, you'll also factor in how deep your pocket and den are:D. Some companies like First Legion, Britains or K&C have regular new releases while others are just cottage like and have the perfume of cottage like things, you'll find them doing small scale slower pace things the bigger players normally don't do... Seeing the figures live is a big plus (at a show or shop), whenever you can. I have had quite a few changes of mind, new things keep coming up and you need more room, this happens to a lot of us collectors, there is quite a secondary market... The offerings are simply great and hard to choose from!
If you ever want to discuss figures it'll be my pleasure (either in these forum threads or using this forum's private mail for example). You'll find that this forum is a great resource and that it is filled with a lot of illustrious experienced collectors (unlike me:D), also sellers and companies, with occasional outbursts of anger due to collector's passion for their favourite soldiers...:D. be prepared, you're about to embark on a fantastic journey;).

Cheers,
Paulo

Welcome Simon, hope you will come down to the London show on December 4th. You will find lots of different traders, tons of figures from all periods and quite a few Treefroggers. ( They are the raucous lot in the bar at 12.30) Look forward to seeing you there.
