This is Hiriart's catalog Set 1008 ACA CARAYA 4TH REGIMIENTO DE LANCEROS, PARAGUAY. Aca Cayara means "monkey's head" in the Guarani language which is the official idiom, along with Spanish, in Paraguay. The lancer's have a strip of monkey fur attached to their helmets, hence the name. They took part in the war against the allied forces of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay from 1864 to 1870, in which Paraguay's population was decimated, being reduced by four-fifths.

During the Chaco War of 1932-35, they were part of the 10,000 man Paraguayan army which drove back an invasion force of 30,000 Bolivians who had been trained and equipped by the Germans including Krupp artillery and airplanes.

This rather poor quality stock photo only shows four figures rather than the five that come with the standard catalog set. This is the only set from Paraguay that Hiriart has in its' catalog; I have it on next year's order for my collection.

Hiriart also made a non-catalog band version of this set. Here is a stock photo that has eight rather than the typical nine figures which Bob Walker got when he ordered the band several years ago. The photo quality is better than on the previous post.
