The mottled mules are very well done. Most makers would just paint them gray

Hiriart also made non-catalog French mountain artillery based on set 1144: WORLD WAR I ARTILLERIE DE MONTAGNA where the figures are wearing Adrian helmets and horizon blue uniforms.

Thanks Mike. Another great thread... This is one of my favorite sets and themes and the grey mules are indeed very well done. In 2012, Hiriart produced this set using a different mule casting and painting them in shades of brown. Attached are pictures of sets stamped 11 and 12 from my collection for your enjoyment. Note that the fourth mule is a deeper brown. Hiriart also produced 2012 Italian Alpini and Austrian mountain artillery sets using the new casting and coloration. Personally, I favor the grey colors for the mountain sets but also enjoy and collect the variations. I'm keeping my eye out for an earlier Alpini set with the smaller grey mules. Best always. John

Hi John,

Thanks, I am glad you are enjoying it. It is a great set. Interestingly, my set produced in 2011, has larger gray mules than your set; also, your brown mules were produced in 2012. I am not sure if Hiriart changed the color of the mules from gray to brown between 2011 and 2012, or what.

Mike

John (Jackson) has ordered a variation of this set for 2014. He has ordered it with all four pack mules carrying boxes with the Chasseurs in white pants and a second set also with all four pack mules carrying boxes, but with the Chasseurs in dark pants.
