A sub-group of Hiriart that I collect is their personality sets. These have a single historic figure along with appropriate other figures. While Hiriart sets normally have nine figures, the personality sets have a total of eight. Here are the first five.

1038 SULTAN'S TURKISH GUARDS with MEHEMET V
1043 LIEBSTANDARTE SS with HITLER
1046 LSSAH, in greatcoats with HITLER
1067 DEUTSCHEN KRIESMARINE U-BOOTE with DORNITZ
1077 KREMLIN SOVIET GUARDS with STALIN

Mike,

Did/does Hiriart make any Franco figures?

Hi Brad,

Unfortunately, they do not. You may recall that Hiriart's Spanish Civil War catalog has 40 sets based exactly on the 40 colour plates in the Bueno book. Even the set numbering (i.e., ES-01 INFANTERIA, 1939 through ES-40 AVIACION LEGIONARIA ITALIANA) is identical. None of those sets/colour plates have any personalities. Sorry.

This personality set is actually a double set which includes a metal diecast Panzer II tank, a PAK35 anti-tank gun and crew, a motorcycle with machine gun sidecar, marching Afrika Korps figures, and a palm tree. It is set 1220 DEUTCHES AFRIKA KORPS with ROMMEL. Pretty neat, huh? I also have a special, non-catalog add-on version of this set with an officer and eight men marching.

Attached is a photo of catalog set 1232 BATTLE FOR ENGLAND, 1940. I have also attached a photo of set 1047 LUFTWAFFE which doesn't ordinarily have a personality figure included, but I have ordered it this year as a special with Hermann Goering replacing the bugler. Since it hasn't arrived yet, I don't have a good photo of this special set, but the Goering figure should be the same as in set 1232.

Although most of the Hiriart personality sets are based on historic World War II personages, attached is a photo of set 1319 IRISH FREE STATE INFANTRY with GENERAL MICHAEL COLLINS, 1923. His gloves appear purple in the photo, but they are not so in the actual set.

Another World War II personality set is 1333 AMERICAL INFANTRY DIVISON, PHILLIPINES, 1944 with MacARTHUR. The Americal Division, the 23rd U.S. Infantry Division, fought on Guadacanal and in the Phillipines in the Pacific Theater. I particularly like the cloth M-1 Garand ammo bandoleers they are wearing. If memory serves me correctly (we had these during Basic Training in 1961 at Ford Ord, CA), each compartment held two, eight round clips.

Here is an unusual subject personality set that you don't see too often, if ever: 1286 ESTADO MAYOR ARGENTINO, 1950 with PERON & EVITA.

On the previous post I said that the Kaiser personality set was from World War I, but it is more likely pre-WWI. Here is a companion set, 1034 KAISER GARDE DU KORPS, where the figures are wearing similar uniforms with different headgear since they are not grenadiers.

I had Hiriart make me a special non-catalog Deutsches Afrika Korps set with a Rommel personality figure. Here he is with a less than ideal photo.

Here is a better look at Rommel from another angle without the flash problem. The set to the right is another special non-catalog set of the WORLD WAR I DEUTSCHES ALPEN KORPS that Rommel served in on the Italian Front as a junior officer.

Absolutely cracking sets once again Mike - and I just love that Personality figure of Rommel - between the two German sets. jb

Thanks JB. My 2012 Hiriart order is filled up, so I am going to order a special non-catalog DAK set in 2013 with the Rommel personality figure. This time I am going to order it with the men in khaki helmets with googles, khaki pants, and faded green tunics based on the two Hiriart figures in the attached photo.

The World War I German Alpen Korps is an unusual set. I wonder if anyone else has ever made it?

I don't know of anyone else who made those figures - though one of the few painted figures in my collection, is a similar kind of figure from Delprado's "Men at War" series. This is the one - Oberfeldwebel, Ski-Jager Brigade c.1943, more or less a descendant of Rommel's outfit perhaps. A nice figure anyway. jb

The Del Prado figure is nice, JB. Hiriart doesn't have any World War II catalog sets depicting ski troops, German or otherwise. However, I have set 1219 WORLD WAR II PRINZ EUGEN S.S. MOUNTAIN DIVISION in my collection which, I believe, was a unit that fought in Jugoslavia against the partisans.

I spotted ES-33 in the Spanish Civil War Series thread, post 8. Not sure how closely the uniform matches later war designs, but it's an attractive and interesting set.

Hi Mike,

You are very observant. I agree that Spanish Civil War set ES-33 ESQUIADORES GUADARRAMA SOMOSIERRA is both attractive and interesting. The Jose Bueno color plate that this set is based on is entitled "Batallon de Esquiadores de la Agrupacion Guadarrama Somosierra." Since I do not speak Spanish, I really don't know what all that means. In any case, I have thought in the past that it might lend itself to be used as the basis for a non-catalog Hiriart World War II German or Finnish ski troop set some day.
