Bob Walker has commissioned a series of Russian Cavalry sets from Hiriart. I just received two photos this morning from Uruguay of the first regiment in this series showing the finished castings of the Russian Grodno Hussars ready for painting. Bob ordered a nine man mounted band including drum horse, plus a double set with an officer, flag bearer, and eight hussars. I have ordered a regular single set for me with an officer, flag bearer, and three hussars.

The next four orders will include Russian Life Guards, Grenadiers a Cheval, 16th Hussars, and Dragoons. None of these Russian cavalry sets are repaints of existing sets, but rather, are completely new. I have learned the hard way that Bob has very good tastes and that I should also order anything he has commissioned for me, too. We should be receiving the Grodno Hussars within the next two weeks. I can hardly wait.

Here are two photos of the painted, nine figure band. After seeing it painted, I have decided to order it for my collection plus two extra musicians.

This photo shows Bob's double set of the Grodno Hussars circa 1890. Note the white plumes versus the red plumes on the band. Also note that they are correctly wearing their peilsses over their backs rather than on their shoulders.

Nice to see them - the way I like to receive them, Mike - even though H doesn't sell them this way, unfortunately.

I can see why they paint up so well - as they are a very nice clean casting. jb

Thanks Fred. It is a very smart uniform. The Grodno Hussars will be the first Russian cavalry from this time period that I will have in my collection. I am looking forward to adding forward to adding the other four circa 1890 Russian cavalry regiments to my collection.

I thought you might like to see some Hiriart castings, Johnny. I know absolutely nothing about castings, but I will take your word on it. Did you see the other castings in the workshop thread?

Yes Mike - and thanks for posting them all. I do like to look at them without paint - as you can then see the quality of the product. They are nice, clean castings - without too much "flash" - which is often present where parts of the mould meet. Easy to remove with a scalpel and then a light fine file. I suspect that the castings you have shown - have been cleaned up before painting commences.

As to the painting - well, for the money, I think it is excellently done by his two ladies. I wouldn't paint the horses eyes in the way they do though - too much white in them for me, whilst I would also paint the leatherwork on the harness slightly differently too - a shade or two differently to the body of the horse, so that it shows up better. But that's just down to personal taste - and I have the time do things that bit differently - whilst theirs is a commercial organisation.

I do understand why H doesn't sell castings - But I still wish they would - because the castings are so good.

But the way it is - is the way it is. There are plenty of people who do - so I will continue to buy from them, to indulge MY hobby - which is painting. jb
