I have finally received a photo of a Hiriart Spanish War set that I had not seen before. It is ES-23 Servicio de Trabajo de F.E.T. y J.O.N.S Milicias, 1939. It represents a work/engineer/sapper unit of two fascist militias that fought on the Nationalists side during the Spanish Civil War.

FET y JONS was the amalgam of the Fascist parties, comprised principally of the Falangist Party (akin to the Nazi Party) and the Carlist party. The Falange was started by Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera (son of the former premier Primo de Rivera) who was executed by the Republicans after the Civil War started. The Carlists were pretenders to the throne going back to the mid 1800s and rather conservative or reactionary to say the least.

Not a set I would want to have.

Mike, certainly a different set of toy soldiers.

Hi Jeff,

I couldn't agree more. It is typical of Hiriart to produce unusual and different subject matter sets not to be found anywhere else. This set certainly fits that description.

Here is what the Bandera de Milicias de F.E.T. y de las J.O.N.S. looks like as set ES-04. And yes Brad, I do have this set in my collection as does Bob Walker since we both are interested in them from a military history point of view.

Here is what Jose Bueno's corresponding color plate looks like. Hiriart did a pretty good job representing Bueno's work
