In addition to the Moroccan cavalry sets I posted elsewhere, the 40 set Hiriart Spanish Civil War catalog has several non-Moroccan cavalry sets. The first is Set ES-07 POLICIA MONTADA DE SEVILLA which are some sort of mounted police from Sevilla. I don't have this set in my collection.

The second cavalry set is ES-08 REQUETTES CABALLERIA; the more complete description on the corresponding Jose Bueno plate is "Caballeria de las Milicias del Requette 1939." Again, the Requettes were the Carlists monanarchist militias that fought on the Nationalist's side during the war and wore red berets. They were ardent Catholics from all classes of society whose stronghold was the province of Navarre. They detested all forms of socialism whether on the right (Hitler and Mussolini) or on the left (Stalin). The Requettes suffered very heavy casualties during the war since they, along with the Tercio, were given the hardests tasks. They started the war with about 8,000 men and reached a total of 42,000 men at one point; however, by the end of the war they had been reduced to 23,000 men.

Mike: Thanks for the great photos and interesting information about the different units in this war. I had no idea that Hiriart had such a broad range of sets. Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Your welcome; I am glad you like them and find the information interesting. I thought I had included a Hiriart catalog CD with your first order. If I didn't or you have misplaced it, let me know and I'll send a new one with your next order. The Hiriart catalog CD has hundreds of photos of the various sets found in the regular catalog, SCW catalog, and non-catalog.

The third Hirart SCW cavalry set is ES-15 ESCUADRON DE LANCEROS. I have this set in my collection. BTW, I misspelled requetes on the earlier post---somehow its seems like it should have two Ts not one.

Thanks Mike. I would appreciate having the CD. Tommy

This is the fourth set in the series: ES-26 GUARDIA CIVIL CABALLERIA. Part of the fiction regarding the Spanish Civil War was that the military overwhelming supported the Nationalist insurgents rather than remaining loyal to the Republic. In fact, the majority of the military fought (along with the International Brigades and Communist, Anarchist, and Syndicalist militias) against the Nationalists led by Franco. The Guardia Civil was no exception, with 20,000 supporting the Republic and 14,000 supporting the Nationalists.

The fifth set in this series is ES-34 LANCEROS DE FARNESIO which is also found in the regular catalog as Set 1274 ESCOLTA REAL, LANCEROS DE FARNESIO. So, these are the King's Royal Escort. I do not currently have this set in my collection, but I do have it on a future order.

The final set in this series is ES-35 AMETRALLADORAS CABALLERIA. The name on the corresponding Jose Bueno plate is "Seccion de Ametralladoras de un Escuadron de Caballeria." It is therefore a mounted Spanish cavalry machine gun section. It is also one of the three double sets in Hiriart's Spanish Civil War catalog.
