Included in the 40 sets that Hiriart has in its Spanish Civil War catalog, are nine sets of Moroccan infantry and cavalry. Along with the Spanish Foreign Legion, they were considered to be some of the elite fighting units in the Spanish Civil War. I personally find these sets to be very collectable given how unusual and rarely seen they are. The first Moroccan set is ES-02 TIRADORES DE IFNI SAHARA. This set includes a three man Hotchkiss machine gun section. I have this set in my collection plus three extra men.

The second Moroccan set is ES-03 MEHAL-LA JALIFIANA. This one of the most popular sets in this series which has been ordered by six or seven other collectors including add-on sets with nine extra men. It is the only SCW Moroccan set also found in the regular Hiriart catalog as set 1215.

The third set in this series is ES-06 ESCOLTA MORA, CABALLERIA. I don't have this set in my collection yet, but Randy (PolarBear) and I have it on order for 2014. There are five folders with text and drawings by Jose Maria Bueno published by Barreira Militaria, Madrid in 1980, which are the basis for Hiriart's SCW catalog. In fact, Hiriart has made one set for each of the 40 Bueno drawings. Bueno entitles his plate number 6 "Escolta Mora de S.E. El Generalisimo, 1939."

The fourth set in this series is ES-11 FALANGE DE MARRUECOS which is called Bandera de la Falange de Marruecos, 1939 on Bueno's corresponding plate. This set also has a three man Hotchkiss machine gun section. It is one of the first Hiriart SCW sets that I added to my collection. Note the blue shirts worn by the various Falange units during the civil war.

The fifth Moroccan set in this series is ES-16 REGULARES DE MELILLA, CABALLERIA which Bueno has entitled "Tabor de Caballeria de Regulares de Melilla, 1939" on his plate.

Neat set. Like the MG team and the flag is quite impressive. Good color combos. -- Al

Thanks Al. We both seem to like colorful combinations (e.g., 1914 French uniforms). I believe that this is the first Hiriart SCW set that I picked up.

Here is the sixth Moroccan set in Hiriart's SCW catalog. It is ES-20 REGULARES DE MELILLA which Bueno entitled "Grupo de Regulares de Melilla numero 2, 1939." ES-20 is the infantry version of cavalry set ES-16.

The seventh Moroccan Hirart SCW set is ES-21 TABOR DE CABALLERIA DE LA MEHAL-LA which is the same description as Bueno's plate.

The eighth Moroccan set in Hiriart's SCW catalog is ES-29 MEHAL-LA JAILIFIANA where the figures have completely different uniforms than set ES-3 with the same name in post number two, above.

The ninth and final Hiriart SCW Moroccan set is ES-38 Regulares de Larache. Jose Bueno's corresponding plate is called "Grupo de Regulares de Larache No. 4." I have this set plus three extra men. In sum, I either have, or have on order, seven of the these nine Moroccan sets in my collection. If I am not mistaken, Bob Walker has all nine sets.

Hi,
once again beautyfull figures you are shareing with us. I like the way the flags are painted a lot and the barracks in the background really add to the overall appearence of this set. The blue shirts where even worn in russia years later. Really interesting period - would like to own all of these sets, but.....
Thanks for shareing!!!
kind regards
Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,

Thank you for your comments. The flags are neat and the barracks does enhance the set. I have been interested in the Spanish Civil War ever since seeing Gary Copper in the movie "For Whom the Bells Toll." I also read Thomas' book on the SCW in the 1960s. It is an interesting historic period not well covered by toy soldier manufacturers. It is probably best that you don't want to own these sets, my 2013 and 2014 Hiriart order books are complete and I already have more than 90 sets out of 120 on the 2015 order. You would have to be a very patient man to wait that long.

Here is set ES-20 REGULARIES DE MELILLA in a barracks display from Hiriart.
