Why don't you send a pm to Mike (ucla1967). I'm sure he can answer your question.

Hi Marcus,

Attached please find a stock photo of Hiriart set 1278 HUNTING TIGERS, INDIA, 1900. It includes all the figures shown in the attachment. The 2015 price for this set is $155. My 2015 order for 120 sets is complete and was submitted to Hiriart months ago; however, I have not yet submitted my 2016 order which still has two available slots, if you are interested. If so, please email directly at matara42@roadrunner.com. Thanks.

Mike

Here is an expanded non-catalog version of set 1278, with more figures which are different. I don't know what the price would be.

Dear Mike,

many thanks for your quick and helpful answers and pictures.
Will send you an email.

Many thanks

Well, as so often happens, Marcus decided against ordering either the catalog 1278 Hunting Tigers set or the special commission expanded "After the Hunt" set. However, two other Treefrog collectors have ordered one set 1278 and two expanded sets between them. And so it goes.

Dear Mike,
many thanks for your help and information. I don t think, that my private decision, not to buy one of the 2 sets should be made officially here in the forum.
It happened, so I should be allowed to explain, why I did not order: I don t like the catalogue set and asked for the expanded set. Including VAT and customs taxes the special set with 11 figures and 1 elephant would cost me here in Europe about 475 USD including shipping. That is -at least in my eyes - by far too expensive. It is sad, that VAT and taxes make products from America too expensive for European collectors...

Hi Marcus,

It certainly was not my intent to embarrass you in any way. Your reasons for not ordering either set are your business and don't require explaining, in my view. However, I thought that the form members who have been following the thread you opened would be interested in what the final outcome of our give and take was.

Only too aware of this problem when buying from USA sellers myself - as it's happened to me too from the UK. Shipping often gets quoted as MORE than the cost of some items ( with insurance, tracking etc almost obligatory). Then there's the added taxes - and "customs import duty" on top. Lastly, there's a perverse charge made by our Postal authorities - for the adressee TO GO AND PICK UP the package. They deliver you a note - to go and fetch it from their Collection Office ( restricted opening hours apply). Oh, and by the way - don't take a credit card - or cheque for payment of all charges - and take the EXACT money - as they don't give change!

I've said it before - elsewhere on this Forum. Buying online from outside The European Union???? - forget it! - unfortunately.

Hi JB,

Yes, this is an unfortunate situation for collectors in the U.K. Interestingly, two Danish collectors are able to order Hiriart sets through me and, although they also pay customs duties and taxes, the amount they pay seems to be less onerous especially with the sets at $75 USD each.

About the only way I can think of to "get around" his unfortunate situation Mike, would be if HIRIART could find some experienced small British/European Toy Soldier company - who he could licence to produce his range of figures as castings - and then paint them to the same standard as the ones he produces.

This would doubtless be a complicated arrangement - and involve an expansion of his current business - that he posssibly doesn't want to undertake thogh.

I wouldn't mind betting that if he did though - he wouldn't be short of customers in Europe (includes UK) - especially if he could peg prices to the sort of figures that you appear to enjoy. jb

That might be a solution, but I don't believe that he would ever do it---it would be too complicated and just too much trouble. However, there is a dealer in the UK (I don't know his name) that sells Hiriart at the London shows. And an Italian dealer, SAIMEX, who also carries Hiriart.
