Hello there:

I posted a thread like this on another forum I belong too and it netted some interesting results- one gentlemen had a katana dating from the mid 15th century. His grandfather took it from an Imperial officer during WW2.

So what historical collectibles does anyone have out there that they are particularly fond of and why? Feel free to post anything outside of military history- like science, politics, sports, etc. Here are some of mine:

A b&w picture of my great grandfather behind a Browning (?) .30 cal in France;

My grandfather's blouse from Viet Nam and most of his medals;

Various pictures of my grandfather during WW2 and Korea;

Various books signed by members of Easy Company and the "Band of Brothers" as well as Colonel Hackworth;

An original WW2 German army map of a region of Austria;

I also have what appears to be a cancelled check signed by some relative of mine way back in 1893- guess he found another way to settle his debt- :eek:

Well, that's about it- nothing too major $$$ wise but very very important to me for sentimental reasons.

STANDS ALONE!!

I've got a brass plaque mounted lump of shrapnel about 4" x 3" that was dug out of my Great Grandfather whilst on board an RN ship (of some description - never found out which one) during WWI. He survived physically but didn't make it much past the end of WWI.

Can't understand why the wife keeps pushing it further back on the living room shelves. :confused:

I have A WW1 Lee Enfield rifle.I also have a clip of British ammo i found on the somme many years ago.I saw a tiny bit of green in the earth,i pulled it and this clip of bullets emerged,quite a moement.I also have many single bullets including a German one i found next to a human leg bone.And dozens of shrapnel balls that are everywhere in France and Belgium.

I don't have too much. I have some bullets and shrapnel from the Battle of Jarama during the Spanish Civil War. My father got it and gave it to me so it has some significance.

This is not militaria but when I was in Normandy I picked up a rock from one of the casements and still have it and call it my "Normandy rock" even though my son makes fun of me :)

I have a few things from WWll. German Kar-98 carbine with scope like used in movie Stalingrad. Berlin 1942 marked on receiver. Scope just a magnifying glass. No precision sniper scope. Also, I have a Japanese Ariska long barrel rifle with a bullet groove through side of rifle stock. A few bayonets, AK and mauser rounds and some belt buckles and patches.I know there is more stuff laying around the family but I also know my elderly aunts got rid of some stuff. Like a Hitler Youth knife and sheath that I use to look at on my late uncle's workbench. Leadmen

It might be interesting if people could post some photos of what they have, such as what you have KV.

I have a leather bound book "DVX" signed by Mussolini in 1926. I also have several signed books: Clinton, Carter, Thatcher, Gorbachev, Reagan etc.

She was ten or twelve when she got it. She had knit twenty pairs of socks for the soldiers. Actually she had two of them. I guess that means she had knit 40 pairs total. Here is one . A tribute to Emily nee Mooney then

Wow KV- I thought you were pulling my leg- you seem to have a pretty easy going attitude like myself. I am glad I waited to see what came out of that.

That is really neat. I will try to post some of my stuff- like I said though, nothing too amazing, just has a wealth of sentimental value.

Wow- that is pretty unique there, the signature of Mussolini. Did you meet all of those other world leaders or did you get them as gifts, ebay, etc?

I got them all myself except for Reagan. Never trust the ebay autographs. I have a bunch of fiction authors as well - my favorite being Patrick O'Brian when he visited Newport News back in the 90's.

It does indeed have sentimental value. It is one of the few momentos I have of hers.

Jeff,

I take it you've dispensed with the need for a house alarm system then?

Simon

It has been deactivated and as it is rather large and heavy, 5'6" long and 80 lbs it's not kept at home.

That's a shame Jeff.

Mount on your roof, fit a motion sensor and a heavy duty motor and I think you'd have a pretty good deterant there. :)
