The HL Hunley was a Confederate submarine that has the distinction of being the first submarine to sink an enemy ship.

On February 17, 1864, carrying a torpedo, the Hunley rammed the USS Housatonic in Charleston Harbor, ripping open a hole in the Housatonic. However, as a result, the Hunley sank to the bottom of the Harbor.

After a 14 year search, it was discovered 131 years later by the author Clive Cussler and his team from the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) discovered the submarine after a 14-year search.

The Hunley was finally raised in August 2000.

See the following from the Naval History and Heritage Command for more information:

A report on the recovery operations, just released on February 15, https://www.history.navy.mil/news-a...s-new-research-into-civil-war-sub-hunley.html

The report issues theories on why the Hunley may have sunk. See the Civil War Picket blog, http://civil-war-picket.blogspot.com/2017/02/hl-hunley-new-report-addresses-6.html

Those sailors had real guts to get into the Hunley. Thanks for posting all the info, Brad. -- Al

They were gutsy indeed. What bugs me is the soldiers that train and are ready to enter combat, only to perish in bad weather like the those floating tanks on D-Day.

I visited the Hunley in Charleston a few years ago.
The crew must have been extremely brave to venture out in such a craft. It is really quite small !
Thanks for posting
Kirk

Glad to post. Saw the article this morning and thought it might be of interest. Like all of you, I can't imagine getting into one of those, let alone a WW II sub. The men of the Hunley were indeed brave.
