PJ & Fran as Exec Producers, New Line & MGM all one big money making family now.

The big and maybe the only question is:

Will the 'Armies of Middle Earth' series be revived ?

Predictions Army Builders ?

I think it has a fair chance, so say yes. All the more popular scales will be dearly bought, and someone will take the smaller scale just to get in on the action. Probably not be as massive a range, but something. I hope.

I want to know when the extended film series comes out on Blu Ray?

What's a Blu Ray, Ray ?

Probably an idiotic question, but I never pay attention to life, always in the history.

Sorry to throw you off track, it's one of the new High definition formats for DVD movies. saturday night I watched "Kingdom of Heaven" in this format on my new 46" LCD TV. You've never seen such an awsome picture! I was driving my wife crazy freezing the picture and walking up to the screen and almost putting my nose on it to see the fine detail, no exageration!
After seeing that the Trilogy would be overwhelming!

Do you need an LCD or a special DVD player to play the blu-ray disc?

Damian
PS does it affect the ozone layer in any way

Yeah, it's Disney's vs Soni's (I have forgotten which company is marketing the change) attempt to change the format of movie players. Sort of like 4 track to 8 track to cassett to disc or beta to VHS to DVD to HDDVD or Bue Ray.

And yes the blue rays will make you sterile :p

Damian,
You are one tough nut! The LCD screen with 1080p maximizes the resolution for the best possible picture, yes you have to have a blu ray disc player which by the way is what is in the Sony PS3 playstation and it won't play regular DVD's.
Not sure if it cuts any holes into the ozone, but it does have a nice Thermo Nuclear attachment that allows you to run it without plugging it into the wall. As a side note this same attachment will heat your house and provides a wonderful Green Glow Night light!
Ray

To say that I have been excited about this new development is an understatement! I just love the Lord of the Rings. Since I love history as much as I do, I believe it was Tolkien's world that is so full of history and legend that attracted my attention as a teenager. Over the past 20 years I must have read the books 6 or 7 times all of the way through.

As far as the newest two movies that will be made, I am very excited about "The Hobbit". That is a lot to cover in one movie, but I am sure they will do an excellent job with their track record. The Battle of the Five Armies should be excellent! I am thinking on par with the Battle at the Pelennor Fields outside of Minas Tirith. Smaug poses problems himself. I just hope they don't use the standard "talking dragon" thing. Maybe they should not show Smaug's face when he talks or that the conversations with Bilbo take place in the "mind". I am sure Peter Jackson will do it right. He has the golden touch on this material.

I have been thinking about the second movie to be made and what material they could possibly use for it. It is to cover the 60 years between the end of the Hobbit and the Fellowship of the Ring. They can cover things such as Arwen and Aragorn, Elrond's refusal to Aragorn, the death of Aragorn's mother, the deaths of both Eomer & Eowyn parents, the demise of Moria under Balin, the wars between the orcs and Rohan, etc... The only problem I see is that there is nothing "big" in that 60 years. I would think they will be forced to take the attack and fall of Dol Guldur from the Hobbit and place it in the second movie. They could also show after that the turning of Saruman.

Anyone else here a big Tolkien fan? Any thoughts or wishes for the next two movies?

Also, if anyone else is interested, I read a good book on Tolkien's service in World War I. It described his experiences and how the Lord of the Rings developed from his time in the trenches. It is titled "Tolkien and the Great War" by John Garth. I am going to give that book to a friend tonight.

mk26gmis, I am a long time Tolkien fan. I love all his Middle-Earth books. I am hoping the Recorded Books version of CoH is in my immediate future :D Can't wait to hear Christopher Lee's narration.

I agree the Hobbit has enough to make a good film. My guess is they will have to be inventive (and secretitive) for a chance to be a great film. That's risky, but I think they will have to be so, to avoid repetition and prequel anti-climaticism.

The 2nd film is much more problematic and I too can not see any really good problem to be solved/resolved in the film. But I really like the Balin in Moria idea. That would be very cool to see it unfold, and in the exactly identical film set. So you get to see the last words written in the Book of Marsubal, how the Goblin caught that axe with his head, etc.

Yes, and how do you re-invent a dragon ? He has some very clever dialog in the book...

From what I read, PJ already has some sort of basic idea on 'arc' of these films, but what it is wasn't said. Rumors abound of course. There will be no shortage of those.

Maloyalo,

My concern is how Smaug is portrayed as well. I remember watching a couple movies that had talking dragons. One was "Dragon Heart" I believe and "Eragon". Both representations in my opinion were just horrible. Smaug does have some very clever dialog in the book and I can't wait to see it done, but actually watching a dragon talk will ruin it for me. If they use an audible voice in the film for Smaug, then they need to cloud or darken the area around Smaug's face when he talks to obscure it. Even if they use Smaug talking to Bilbo in his thoughts, I don't think they should show the dragon's face while you hear the voice onscreen. I would use the method of the old "Jaws" film. You don't really see the entire shark until the end. I am sure Peter Jackson won't do something cheesy on this.

So is the Hobbit movie a done deal? last I heard nagotioations with Peter Jackson had broke down and someone else was going to direct it? I have heard nothing on a second new movie? can you direct me to a link?
As far as Smaug, Dragons are basically Snakes, and a good director should look to the snake for examples of the cold, silent, cunning of that beast for an example of the ruthless nature of the dragon.

mk, I am totally with you about the Dragon voice, actually the whole dragon thing being critical. It seems like a big mine-field, like playing the game, Operation, with the DT's.

On the TORn site a while back, we were discussing the Mirkwood Spiders and their voice question One person had the idea, you couldn't understand what they were saying unless you had on the ring, and then it was, I think, more a telepathic voice. No spider lips. I thought that was a pretty clever idea.

As far as Smaug goes I do not remember a really interesting idea, but I bet one is out there with Das Fans working overtime.

Yep nmrocks, it is real this time. The latest rumors about a deal surfaced a few weeks ago. But most fans weren't biting anymore, due so many false ones before. But Newline & PJ have settled the lawsuit, out of court and they with MGM, made a official press release announcement. Two films.
