After having read a fantastic book called Three Empires on the Nile - The Victotian Jihad, 1869-1899 by Dominic Green - Pub by Free Press- 2007 -ISBN 13:978-0-7432-8071-6, I thought it would be a great idea to post all the pictures I have in my album called The Square. The book is a must to understand the reason why Egypt and Sudan are what they are today.....I have read many books covering the Expeditions into the Sudan, the Churchill accounts, the opening of the Nile and so on, but this is the first book that summarizes all this into fluid pages and adds a political spectrum to the military scene....with the final chapters linking the today´s situations to how it all began.....I even know now that a grandson of the Mahadi is a politician in Sudan....^&grin:cool::cool:

I love the pix showing the inside of the square. Lots of confusion going on there.

Can you tell us which brands of figures are shown? I think I see some K&C, Steadfast, Britains and JJD among others.

Some wonderful sets AC. No one is going to penetrate that square, some serious fire power contained within. The Gatling guns were always positioned on the corners to provide extra protection for these weak spots. You certainly have captured the square in every aspect. Robin.

Hi Fritz,
Thanks for the note, I really love this period when warfare was starting to get automated...Magazine Lee Enfileds and Maxim Machineguns...but the sword and bayonet were still pretty much part of the show.
As to the manufacturers I really like mixing them, reason why I am so much fixed on scale equality....
The Howitzer is Bulldog, the Maxims on Cavalry carriages are Steadfast and the one on infantry carriage is WETs ( our late Wilson Edwards )......and a second Maxim on a smaller Infantry carriage is Mountford manned by Little Legion soldiers, as is the Howitzer. The ammo cassion and water cart are of some unknown manufacturer ...but they just fit in very nicely.
The mounted officer is Stadden and the 21st Lancer is Rank & File...
One side of the square is made up of Maison Militaire.
One side of the square you again have WETs , Rank & File and some Tradition of London, but the overall bulk of the forces are Stadden.
Unfortunately, no K&C or JJD on the British square for their scale is off the scale match...they would be too big.
As to the Mahadists, here we have JJD, Mariella, Stadden and Britains......
I plan to add more Stadden troops and enlarge the Highlander presence in the square sometime this year.....as we speak the Regiment is being raised :salute:::salute:::salute::
Thanks a lot for the interest..
Cheers

Hi Robin,
Thanks for the note....
Yes the machineguns would always be at the corners of the square so as to have maximum impact on the in coming poor Mahardists.....I on purpose left one gun in the middle of the line of one of the sides of the square due a strong position for the riflemen at the corner behind a stone wall......^&grin^&grin guess that the WETs gun will draw havoc on the in coming Mahadists way before they can reach the wall.....;););)
In my case they are all Maxims...I have left the first Sudan Expedition time behind with the Gatlings, Nordenfelts and single shot Martin Henrys and moved on to the maximized fire power of the Maxims and Lee Metfords....:salute:::salute::
Cheers
