Good afternoon.
Hiriart's marching soldiers are one of my favorites but their mounted troops are not.
Can anyone explain why the eyes on the horses have to have a white blob with a black dot?
Why not do the eyes the way Imperial and Regal do them?
It gives the figure a cartoon-like appearance. If they did that it might improve their sales.
The horses also look way too small as well. is it just me?

Welcome to the Forum. I am glad you like Hiriart's marching soldiers. With respect to the way the eyes are painted on the horses, that is the way they have been painting them for years, so they probably are not going to change that any time soon. However, it doesn't bother me in the least. Whether the horses are too small or not, I'll leave for others to judge, but I must admit I hadn't noticed it before (i.e., they look ok to me). Also, they probably don't want to increase sales---not that it wouldn't be nice to make more money---because they are such a small mom and pop company working out of an apartment, I doubt if they could handle the extra sales volume. For example, my March 2011 order with them was for 161 sets; I expect to recieve the last 49 sets from this order this month. So, it has taken them a year to complete my entire order and I had to postpone (drop) 14 sets to get the balance of the 2011 order shipped this month.

Thank you Mike.
Hiriart does offer some very unique sets which are well made and quite appealing.
I guess it is true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree that Hiriart makes unique sets which are well made and appealing. And yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder in toy soldiers and in life.

How many Hirart sets do you have in your collection? If you don't have a Hiriart catalog list, contact me at matara42@roadrunner.com and I'll email you one.

Hey, when the horses are white they don't look so bad! Hiriart set 1180 FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION CAVALRY, 1923.

Thanks again Mike.
I have 3 sets. Had owned 15 or 16 others which I reluctantly sold.
One of my favorites was the WWI German Naval group in Africa (pith helmets, white uniforms…don't remember number).
Best regards,
Dave.
ps: Your photo is great!

Hi Dave,

Hiriart's World War I in Africa sets are among my favorites. On my pending 2012 order with Hiriart I am ordering five sets of 1245 DEUTSCHE SUD WEST AFRIKA TRUPPE as specials in khaki tropical uniforms. In addition, I am ording about 22 non-catalog sets of three different WWI in Africa troops: KING'S AFRICAN RIFLES, 1914; FORCE PUBLIQUE, BELGIAN CONGO, 1914; and PORTUGUESE COLONIAL INFANTRY, MOZAMBIQUE. Attached are photos of set 1245 in their grey uniforms and 1104 WORLD WAR I GERMAN IMPERIAL NAVY.

Best regards,

Hi Dave,

I've attached a photo of three Hiriart mounted sets that I have on display. When you see them as a group on a macro level, the micro details (e.g., how the eyes are painted) on individual horses becomes less important, IMHO. However, I must admit, that eight of the 15 figures have blinders on the horses, so the eye detail is not as prominent as it would be otherwise.

Another nice photograph!
The blinders do help as well as the grouping of cavalry.
You have some very nice sets!
Thanks again.
Dave.
