Gentle Friends,

Once again, I have succumbed to the beauty of a line I have never before collected! I made the fatal error of visiting the Beau Geste room at OTSN. Well,...I actually made approximately seven visits to that room. For years, I resisted collecting Napoleonic figures,...and...I resisted collecting figures depicting the grandeur of the Dehli Durber. Now all that is in the past. I simply could no longer resist adding Durber sets to my collection. So what did I do?

I purchased four sets of the Beau Geste Dehli Durber series of figures (Dave, are you reading this?). Included in my purchasing was the magnificent Kashmir Elephant, Beau Geste set #201! It seems I am now eternally hooked on these wonderfully beautiful figures. As I sit and admire these bright and colorful miniatures, I wonder if any toy soldier collection is really complete without some representation of the Durber within it. I know my collection is greatly enhanced by their presence. Thank you, Ana and company, for producing such a wonderful line. As I can, I will add more of these great sets to my collection!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Pat, I really like your sign on phrase by-the-way (it's so optimistic), anyway, I agree, the only problem I have is that of cash flow. There are so many wonderful sets by many companies, but those elephants and the sets that accompany them look beautiful. I can imagine a set-up with a front-row-center position to show them off. In my mind, I have many collections.

Oh Pat,

Welcome to the dark side!

I was wondering aside from the elephant which other sets did you nab?

Dave

Hi Dave,

The other sets I nabbed are as follows:

Set # 85 - Jaisalmer's Litter
Set #159 - Ladakin Devil Dancers
Set #160 - Ladakin Musician Monks

In addition, I could not resist purchasing another Beau Geste set which is unrelated to the Dehli Durber:

Set #167 - French Foreigh Legion Marching with Sombreros, Mexico, 1863.

Yes, Dave, I am clearly now a card carrying member of the Dark Side! Ain't it fun. :)

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi Pat,

I am seriously jealous but I am glad to see someone else who is now smitten by the Durbar sets. I do love the Monks and Devil Dancers and will be looking to get those sometime in the future. I am saving for a couple of sets right now that will be on my list to St Nicholas.

I am looking at Miss Bell with the Kashmiri Giants to be displayed off center from the Durbar Dias when I get enough room to put it up. I am also looking at one of their elephants, deciding which is the real problem. Of course these will be great acquisitions if I can stay focused and keep away from the Winged Polish Hussars from the Russian builders and the occasional trip down Imperial Lane when the NZ series pops up....

So many wonderful sets out there and so little time.

Well anyway welcome to the club!

All the best

Dave

Dave,

I almost hate to tell you this, but I also bought a Polish Winged Hussar at the show. The company from which I purchased it was temporarily out of stock, but they will be delivering it to me the first week of October. Previously, I have had excellent experience with this company so I have no reservations about the quality of the item.

I also tried to purchase a second Winged Hussar from another company, but they had sold their last one, which forced me to purchase two other museum quality pieces from them instead of the Hussar. Now, isn't that a really sad tale? :)

It seems I am a card carrying member of several dark sides!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Pat: Is the fall to the dark side a long drop? I am getting closer to the edge. I do think you made some excellent choices. I am sure you will enjoy each piece everytime you look at them. Now how about Crusaders and a castle? John

Hi Pat,

If you dont mind saying which company did you get the Winged Hussars from? I am always looking for some new ones I found some recently but havent made a purchase from them yet. I'll take a photo of a couple of the ones I have and submit it later. Have to get the kids ready for soccer.

Talk to you later

Hi Dave,

I purchased the Polish Winged Hussar from Sergey Ilyashenko. Sergey has proven to be a good friend and I purchased several footed figures from him at the show in addition to the Winged Hussar. His contact information is listed below:

Sergey Ilyashenko
www.soldierart.com
1082 Madison Avenue
New York, New York 10028
Store Phone: (212) 861-9708
Mobile Phone: (646) 552-9790
E-mail: info@soldierart.com

Sergey is a very pleasent, but soft spoken fellow. He speaks with a Russian accent, but he is easily understood. The Winged Hussar I purchased sits astride his horse which is jumping a fence. Check it out! I think you will like it!

Let me know if you make contact with Sergey and if you decide to purchase anything from him. I think his stuff is really nice. I own serveral pieces that I have bought from him and I am very pleased with them.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

John,

Ha! I have no idea how long the fall to the dark side is as I am still falling! ;) However, the sense of weightlessness on the way down is interesting.

I did not purchase any of the K&C Crusaders, but I was sorely tempted. I did, however, acquire the seige tower. I wanted to see it I could use it with my Russian footed figures. The largest problem I have with the tower is the height of it. It simply does not work well in my curio cabinets. I will have to give some more thought on just how to use it effectively.

I know you puchased some of the Battle of the Bulge figures, but did you purchase Crusaders as well? If so, what do you think of them? Is the Castle on your list of future purchases?

Oh! Thank you for comment about my purchases being good ones. I am exceptionally pleased with what I brought home. I am still unpacking items and placing them on my inventory. Unfortunately, I am not sure where I am going to place everything when I get it all unpacked! Somehow, I am not too troubled by the problem of where to place items. At this point, I am simply pleased to have the problem! :)

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Pat: I was tempted to get some crusaders but did not buy any. I am focusing on BOB figures and sets. Also, I need another cabinet. Most purchases this year are still in boxes. I want to get Britains glossy and Rev War also. I need more but retirement did put a cramp on some purchases. I don't need prescriptions, maybe just more guys. John

John,

I know what you mean. Retirement does make you think twice before purchasing too many items. On the other hand, what is retirement for if not to enjoy yourself? We simply need to be reasonable about how many figures we acquire and at what rate we do so. The fact that we cannot buy everything we want simply means we have more things for which to look forward. Not having to pay for prescriptions also helps with funding our hobby. Perhaps the hobby helps prevent the need for prescriptions? However, good health and financial considerations don't seem to prevent me wanting more! :D

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Pat you kill me!

Here is a photo of a couple of my Winged Hussars.

Enjoy

Dave,

Those are great figures! Can you tell me who produced them? Are they considered limited editions?

The Winged Hussar I wanted to purchase at the show, but was unable to, was a limited edition item. The manufacturer only produces 100 figures before breaking the molds. Since the Winged Hussar was not available at the show (I can still purchase one as long as the total supply of 100 is not depleted), I chose to purchase two other limited edition pieces:

King of France, Francis I, circa 1540 (Number 27 of 100)

and

Duke of Guise, King of the Americas, Quadrille 5: Savages of the Americas, circa 1622 (Number 15 of 100)

The Duke of Guise is the first figure in the Louis XIV GRAND CAROUSEL series. King Louis XIV organized a great parade through the streets of Paris in 1692. This parade is known as the GRAND CAROUSEL and featured nobility dressed as Romans, Turks, Persians, Indians, and Savages of the Americas. The Duke of Guise is dressed as a "Savage of the Americas" and it is a grand and unique figure! I think I like it better than the Winged Hussar I was after.

I simply purchased the Francis I figure because I really liked it. While it is a limited edition piece, it is not part of a series.

Even though I was not able to purchase the specific Winged Hussar I was after, I think I bought some really good figures that I will enjoy for years to come. I better enjoy these figures as it will take me until the year 2012 to recover from my purchases in Schaumburg!

But,...Ain't it fun! :)

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi Pat,

I found them on ebay and the seller was an ebay store called
Kharkoff-soldiers. I dont know if they are limited editions but I do know they aren't in their stock all the time. I believe the source is a maker in St Petersburg because the packages come from Russia. I like them a lot and I didnt pay all that much for them which is always good as far as I'm concerned. I have the two on display and a third one in my wifes stah of to be given at a later date box. I also have a dismounted figure on the way but it hasnt arrived yet.
Please post some pictures of your new ones if you get a chance, they sound just fantastic.
Take care

Dave
