Can anyone tell me the time frames with Britains...such as the first sets made and how they progress. Years made or sets made type info. Maybe it is to complex of stuff for me to collect as it seems abit overwhelming or maybe someone can simplify. Do the item numbers as with the age start with #1 and progress out to #8000 or something???

Hi There,

Ther simple answer is yes.

Now for the complications to that simple answer. There are several very good reference books out there that can tell you a great deal about Britains production. If you can find a copy of Obriens book, Toy Soldiers Identification Guide from 1997, Joe Wallis Regiments of All Nations or Opies, The Great Book of Britians You also need Joplins book Britains New Toy Soldiers, 1973 to present (2008) You should be able to find all the information you need on any set made by Britains up to that point. The kicker is that these publications are hard to come by at times especially the Great Book of Britains. The Joplin book is still in print and I have seen many of them on ebay.

If you have a specific question or a need a set Identified post a photo of the figures and box etc. There are a lot of folks here who excell at IDing old Britains and other brands.

To add to what Dave said, there isn't a book out set that fully documents the matte series that Britains have been working on. Catalogues on the TF homepage are your best bet for that type of info.

We are planning on having a guidebook ready at the end of February - to be released with the new 2010 catalog that will show everything W. Britain has made under First Gear ownership - this should go a long way to bringing folks up to speed. The Ertl and RC2 days also need to be covered and there have been some discussions with authors about that as well.

Stay tuned!

Hi Richard,
The guidebook sounds great. I would be great if this book could have section mentioning the source material that Ertl and RC2 used for painting the uniforms of various regiments.
