Randy,

Another of your images that has knocked me of my chair !!

With just one figure, you have managed to produce very powerful images with great backdrops.

The illustrative value of your work is just out of sight.

I certainly have a lot to learn from you.

Regards, Raymond.

Thank you for your compliments. I like working with small groups of figures partly as a result of my training as an art historian. The types of painting that I have been influenced by are shown below. These are all by American painters of the 19th C which is my area of expertise.

Randy,

Thanks very much for your reply.

Your work has added a whole new dimension to collecting miniatures.

You have very elegantly combined military history, art and collecting miniatures into excellent graphic form.

I have been reviewing your collector cards and these are further examples of your fine work.

The titles of your threads are also very well selected and structured to engage viewers.

I must confess that I know next to nothing about 19th Century American painting.

Have a Great Weekend, Raymond.

Hi Randy, Those paintings from the 19th century are beautiful. Those two boys sitting in a field, what happened to them when they got up and walked into the rest of their lives? The artist certainly captured something.

That painting entitled Boys in A Pasture is by Winslow Homer and dates from 1874. The period after the American Civil War saw a proliferation of images of children in American art and literature as an attempt to regain the innocence that was lost during the war years. It was also an attempt to portray the new generation that would replace those lost in the war. The painting is one of many by Homer and his contemporaries. Such paintings are contemporary with other books featuring children such as Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and Alcott's Little Women. Homer's paintings are often used on the covers of new editions of these books. His painting of children playing outside a country school called Snap the Whip (below) is also frequently used. This painting is meant to show the new interest in getting children outdoors as part of the educational process rather than being cooped up all day in a classroom.
