Hi

In part of my AWI diorama I have a trackway and a crop field.

At the moment I am using dried compost for the field and sand for the track.
The compost seems to be far to dark for use as soil and the sand looks ok as a trackway, but I want to make them look really good and take them to the next level.

At the moment it just doesn't look convincing enough to me it just looks like I have poured sand and some compost on the board, how do you achieve really realistic looking fields and tracks that the experts and professionals have??

Any guidance for a novice gratefully received! ;):)

I think it is becuase the scale it too large, you may want to try a model railroad shop and buy some ballast that can be used for your paths and they probably have some brown scatter that can be used for fields. You could also try used dried coffee grinds for the soil.

I'll second that on the dried coffee grounds. And they smell nice, too.

But I'll ask a followup question-what are you using for the groundwork? For example, are you making a base out of Celluclay, over a hard substrate like a piece of plywood, or are you using a piece of foam, and cutting/engraving the ruts, etc, into the foam?

Prost!
Brad
