So, like I've said before in previous posts I'm fairly new to collecting. Well, when I first got into it I bought soldies willy nilly, not really collecting one specific line or regiment, era, etc. So now I'm dabbling in ecommerce on ebay. I've made several sales in the past few months but today I made my first international sale to Canada. The individual asked if I could open up the buying oprions for Canada so I did. He purchased the solier from me and made the comment about the s&h being a little high and asking if there is extra s&h the he paid for and didn't use could I refund him. I have absolutely no problem doing this, I don't want to jip ANYONE. The problem is....how do I know if he over paid on the s&h???? I apologize for my ignorance in advance to anyone that helps. Post in the thread or send me a personal message. I'd greatly appreciate it.

I assume you’re charging for shipping plus packaging materials. If you’ve estimated it correctly there should be nothing to refund. I’m not sure how you as the seller wouldn’t know the actual costs to a buyer.

That's what I am charging for. I'm not sure why I wouldn't know either, hence why I'm asking for help. All other transactions I've made on ebay have gone without a hitch. I couldn't underatan why there would be any extra left. I thought I did everything correctly.I guess I was just wondering exactly how there could be overage. I appreciate your feedback though.

I would tell him that this is the cost and if you’ve overestimated shipping, you’ll refund the difference.

Perhaps have a look at
https://postcalc.usps.com/

and see directly : if you change the destination country , the screen is different; now I think that if you follow the step by step, you will get the right price .

In any case in Belgium it's what I do consulting the price of Belgian Post
And when I have a doubt about the sending cost from an ebay seller in France I consult the price list of France Post .. etc
Sometime you discover thinks like :
a paper document from Malta announced cost on ebay 16,50€, consulting Maltese post service: 1,2€

Thanks for ya'lls input. I calculated everything today before I sent it to the post office and everything was good.

That postage calculator is a great tool. Thank you! I don't know why I didn't even think to search the USPS website for that.

I will ship any where but they, the buyer, must use Ebays Global Shipping. My responsibility ends when ebay gets it at their shipping location in Kentucky.
Never had a problem.

Global shipping is outstanding; as Gary mentioned, all you the seller have to do is get the parcel to Ebay in Kentucky; from there, Ebay takes over and if it goes missing or if the item shows up damaged, Ebay refunds the buyer and you are out of the picture.

It's tremendous.

I have found that...

the thing about selling from the US to Canada...
is that it's considered and calculated as an "International shipping" charge through Ebay's postage in your transaction...
when it's actually right across our border...

so through Ebay's postage software...
the buyer in Canada is billed a higher "International price"...
when actually it is as close to domestic as possible...
so in reality...the true postage is usually much cheaper...

with you though...
that's only if you have an "International shipping price" listed...
I don't know if you do or not...
but assume you don't as you already mentioned that you excluded Canada...

I think Ebay's shipping software needs to be tweaked on their US to Canada charges...

example...

they may calculate $20 for me to ship it to Canada...
but when I plug in the weight into Ebay's shipping software...
it's usually considerably lower...

I have seen this happen numerous times...

I don't use Ebay's Global Shipping...
while it has a lot of pros for the seller...
I think it discourages sales as it is unusually high postage for the buyer...

I agree with Mike. The Global Program is an ebay gimmick to extort money. It does not allow to have a combined shipment for multiple items purchased from the same seller. And if you buy two or more items you pay the complete postage for each item and then you receive a unique parcel for all.
As I know the Program is in use in US and UK, usually I avoid to buy from the sellers who apply it (or at last I buy one only item).
Cheers

I can't speak for other sellers, but if an international buyer contacts me wanting to buy more than one item, I work with him PRIOR to the sale to reduce the shipping.

The global shipping program protects the buyer and the seller in the event of an issue with the item arriving or arriving damaged, not to mention I don't have to fill out forms and wait and hour and a half while the clerk types in 900 words to complete the transaction.

I wouldn't sell on Ebay without it and sell a lot of items through the program, so my buyers don't feel like they are getting extorted, sorry that you feel that way.

I totally agree with George. I'm pretty sure if the international buyer buys more than one item from a seller and puts it in his cart prior to finishing the sale it will allow combined shipping.
Finally ebay has a protection for the seller. It's just to easy for an international buyer to screw over the seller. As I've stated over and over. I'm not in the retail business. You don't play by my rules, we don't play. I don't need sales that bad that I have to deal in BS.
