I will be presenting a Figarti "Dick Rossi" P40 to a real 51st Pursuit Squadron Pilot

As I was waiting to pull into a parking space at the local Pathmark at Wheatley Plaza two days ago, on a routine errand to purchase paper towels, I noticed that the car pulling into the space opposite mine had "FlyngTgr" as a license plate. The elderly gentleman who exited the vehicle, Lenny Glick, had on a red "Flying Tiger" baseball cap, with several service pins on it.

I introduced myself to Mr. Glick, and asked if he was a Flying Tiger. He said yes, but he served under Claire Chenault in the U.S. Army Air Corps. in China after the AVG had been re-absorbed into the U.S. Army Air Corps., 14th Air Force. Mr. Glick served in the 51st Pursuit Group, one of the 14th Air Force squadrons to bear the "Flying Tigers" name thereafter. I thanked him for his service, and told him about the "museum" in my home I keep commemorating the service of the Allied Forces, especially my own deceased Uncles Joe, John & Jack Amana, and Leo Badolato.

We had a great conversation, and I asked if he would like to see the "museum". He told me he would love to come by, and wanted me to have some Flying Tiger papers and memorabilia in his possession. I told him I would be incredibly honored if he visited, and to accept his keepsakes, but only if he would permit me to present him with a Figarti "Dick Rossi" autographed P40. He agreed, we exchanged information, and he will come by next week. I bought the P40, and it shipped to me from Matt Murphy at the Hobby Bunker today.

Any of you locals who would like to come and meet Mr. Glick, please PM me or call me, and I will fill you in once he gives me a day and time.

Great story . I'm sure he was very surprised to hear how much you knew of his units history. It is always a real treasure to meet such men .I'm sure you gentlemen will become good friends , In my personal experience over the years most of the time their own family has no interest in their history . I'm honored to have made several very good friends in the same manor :) And very honored to have been given several wonderful items for safe keeping just because they wanted someone to have them who would take care of them and appreciated them. I even have met veterans whose own grandchildren have stolen there items to pawn for drug money. It is really quite sad. But Great story and I look forward to hear how it unfolds thanks for sharing . And please tell him thanks for his service from the rest of us guys. All the best gebhard

I'm hoping that Brad (Jazzeum), Chuck (Evilchuck) Jeff, Larry Lo, Rich Schuster and Morgan Hoffman will come by to meet and help me honor Mr. Glick. Maybe we can take him to lunch at Bryant & Cooper afterwards. I can't wait until he calls!

That's a neat story Louis. It's always an honor to meet and talk with WWII veterans. One of my most memorable was years ago when I visited the tank museum at Bovington England and was looking at the Grant tank. There was en elderly English gentelman sitting close by and saw me looking the tank over real close. He began talking to me and said that the Grant brought back bad memories for him. He said he was a medic in North Africa and one of the worst experiences he witnessed was after a battle and several Grant's had been destroyed. With tears in his eyes he told me that the carnage was awful and that he would never forget that day. Not knowing exactly how to respond to his emotional state I just thanked him for his service and for being there. It's very moving to see an 80 year old man have memories bring him to tears.

Louis,

I am sure this will be a meeting to remember.

It is a very nice gesture on your part to present Mr. Glick a model of the P40, which I am sure he will treasure.

I hope the others will join you in honoring him.

Best Wishes, Raymond.

Louis that was a great gesture you have made to this Elderly ex service man.In return he is giving you more than just papers but history and his life story .You are a lucky man to have the chance to talk to a guy like this.I wish I was there too at dinner with you guys.Twenty Five + years ago I backed pack around Canada and the northern parts of the US and meet up with some old guys in a bar and grill in some small town in Washington state .We got talking and One guy new I was a Australian straight away and asked If I had heard of a place called Charleville in Sth West Queensland. He flew B17 bombers out of there heading for the Japs in the South Pacific. Not only did I no this place but my Father had a sheep station 100 km nth at Adavale. My Dad saw them lay the concrete for the air strip in Charleville with great ore as the Americans had machines laid the air field in one go.He also saw his first black yank and had soft serve ice cream.I had a great time and my money was no good that night and I got really pissed. That's a good thing in Australia not meaning angry.I gave the old guys a Twenty cent piece each and they were over the moon. Our Twenty cent piece ways allot and looks good. With all the travelling I have done that still sticks out in my mind.Simmo.

Louis, this is a great story, and very honorable on your part to recognize this gentleman for all that he has done for this country. I work at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, and now that these WW-II guys are approaching their late eighties and nineties, I have met quite a few of them, and I always make sure they are recognized by the entire staff! I wouldn't have it any other way! Tony

Anyone in the area who would like to meet and thank Mr. Glick, and probably grab some lunch together afterwards, please either PM or e-mail me for my address, directions, etc.

Re: I will be presenting a Figarti "Dick Rossi" P40 to a real 51st Pursuit Squadron P

Gentlemen, I just had the pleasure of entertaining 51st Pursuit Squadron Flying Tiger veteran Lenny Glick in the museum, along with fellow collector Rich Schuster (NYSoldiers). He told us some great stories of his experiences in China and (briefly) India with the 14th Air Group, 51st Pursuit Squadron. On behalf of all collectors and treefroggers, as well as the Wang's and Figarti, we presented him with a Figarti P40 autographed by Dick Rossi. He was an extremely modest gentleman, downplaying his service, and seemed genuinely overwhelmed that we appreciated it. He seemed particularly touched when my 4 year old son Alec thanked him for his service (which I had carefully coached Alec to do ).

In addition to tons of documents, he presented me with the leather patch from his flight jacket, a shield shaped patch in the design of an American flag but with both American and Chinese star symbols on the blue portion, as well as a vintage 51st Squadron Pin. I will be framing both with a photograph of Lenny and myself in the museum, and dedicating a display to Lenny and 51st.

Rick Wang of Figarti generously offered to make Lenny a P40 in 51st Pursuit Squadron markings, and Lenny, who was really touched, accepted the offer. In the spirit of "the Greatest Generation," Lenny said that he would donate the special Figarti "51st Pursuit Squadron P40" to the 14th Airforce Museum, where all of his all squadron mates could appreciate it.

We also invited Lenny to join us at the NY Symposium on March 6th, where I am sure everyone attending will enjoy meeting him as much as I have.

The visit and presentation were photographed by my sister-in-law, Jess Borg, a professional phtographer, and once she e-mails me the photos, I will forward them to Brad or Brian with a polite request that they post them on this thread.

Louis:

It is great of you to honor a great American hero. They deserve the honor and respect for answering the call to duty when our country needed them most in WWII. Their generation was truly a great one. I wish I could be there to meet the man.

Re: I will be presenting a Figarti "Dick Rossi" P40 to a real 51st Pursuit Squadron P

Gentlemen, my sister-in-law, Jess Borg, who photographed the event, sometimes submits photos and stories to the local newspaper, the Roslyn News. She sent me the following article she is submiting about Mr. Glick:

LOCALS HONOR FLYING TIGER

Photos and Text by Jessica Borg

Our nation’s greatest living natural treasure, the few surviving men and women who served in World War II, is swiftly dwindling in number as we approach the 70th Anniversary of our entry into the War. This weekend, some residents of the Roslyn area took the opportunity to honor a local member of this “Greatest Generation”, Flying Tiger Lenny Glick, who served under Claire Chenault in the U.S. Army Air Corps. in China after the AVG had been re-absorbed into the U.S. Army Air Corps., 14th Air Force. Mr. Glick served in the 51st Pursuit Group, one of the 14th Air Force squadrons to bear the "Flying Tigers" name, from 1943 through 1945, fighting the Japanese from airfields in China and India.

A chance meeting gave rise to this opportunity to appreciate a real American Hero. As local attorney and amateur historian Louis Badolato was waiting to pull into a parking space at the local Pathmark at Wheatley Plaza last month, on a routine errand, he noticed that the car pulling into the space opposite his had "FlynTigr" as a license plate. The elderly gentleman who exited the vehicle, Lenny Glick, had on a red "Flying Tiger" baseball cap, with several service pins on it.

Mr. Badolato introduced himself to Mr. Glick, and asked if he was a Flying Tiger. He said yes, and Mr. Badolato thanked him for his service. Mr. Badolato, who keeps a "shrine" in his home commemorating the service of the Allied Forces, especially his own deceased uncles, asked if Mr. Glick would stop by.

When Mr. Glick visited on January 30th, Mr. Badolato and area business man Rich Schuster presented Mr. Glick with a museum quality autographed replica of the P40 Tomahawk Fighter piloted by famous Flying Tiger squadron leader and ace Dick Rossi. Mr. Glick seemed particularly touched when Mr. Badolato’s four year old son Alec thanked him for his service. Mr. Badolato stated that it was an honor to show his appreciation to the veterans who gave so much to all of us, while simultaneously affording his children the opportunity to meet these great men before they are gone. He urged that anyone who knows a veteran, be it of WWII or a more recent conflict, take a few moments to just say thank you for their service. It only takes a couple of seconds, and you will never know how much it will be appreciated.
