I have a hollowcast lead soldier, 60mm including cap. There are no discernable marks on the base, (I have replaced a huge chunk). The rifle is carried high, and at the slope. The trousers look like Trews or Breeches, and the only remnants of paint, consist of some green around the collar & boots, the "Sam Browne" belt has been painted on so may not be original. The jacket is similar to the Scottish Tunics, and the waist belt has one pouch plus bayonet.
I intend repairing the rifle, then painting, but I refuse to just guess, I would appreciate a realistic colour scheme to follow. Anyone recognise him?

We may never know then, I will probably do him as a Scottish type, not sure about the cap though.

I'm not sure of the maker, but going on the shako, and the Scotish Tunic, he would have to be

Highland Light Infantry or Cameronian (Rifles)

Seeing you say there is green paint remnants, I'd say Cameronian.

This a pic of my Brigadiers soldiers, with Royal Scots usier on the left, then HIL and Cameronian. (L-R)

Thanks Obee, you are thinking the same as me. The one on the right was something that looked suitable.

I had no idea of the Regiment, so was looking for a similar one to copy.

The oval base can help identify the maker. I can look in my books and see if I find anything like him.

Prost!

Thanks Brad. The base measures about 25mm by 20. It would be nice to put a name to this figure.

Hi There,

I believe what you have is a very, very old W. Britain's figure from set number 213. Highland Light Infantry, Slope. It was originally an 8 figure set and he was wearing a very typical HLI uniform for around 1900. Trews with a belt not a Sam Brown white piping and the usual dressing on the uniform and Shako. The figure was produced from about 1912 (break for war) continuing to around 1938 or so, I don't have any info on post war production handy, I will have to dig out my big book of Britains to get more details. If you are wondering about value, in this condition he would fetch about 10 bucks per figure. Hope this information helps.

Dave

He does look similar to that figure Dave, but the Britains one (that I found in my book) does not have the pouch and the arm is more curved. Could it have been removed in later productions?

Hi Scott,

Good catch I noticed the pouch this morning as well so I am wondering if it is a different company. I am going to look at some of my references over breakfast and see if I can figure this guy out.

Dave

Ok I took a good look and believe that this figure is from a company called Wellington Toy Company of Liverpool. They were made from 1906 to 1923. They made a lot of toy soldiers and in the book Toy Soldiers by Andrew Rose on page 99 figure number 38 is our man. I have no idea of what he might be worth but its certainly an oldie and a very fun little guy to restore.

Looking forward to seeing the new man when you are done with him.

Dave

Thank you for the help Gents, it is very much appreciated. I have looked at the base with a magnifying glass, and can't find any marks at all. I will be doing him up as a Cameronian, and promise to post the pics on here, it may be a while though.

Dave and Mike, you beat me to posting back. Well done on the ID, prosit!
Brada

OK Gents, I have finished the job. I used this as an experiment with marker pens, and was quite pleased with the results. The figure is based on the Cameronian Rifles (loosely). The plume was enlarged with Araldite, the rifle consists of two different sized paper clips, and the rest of the figure pretty much just needed paint. I will be using a fine marker pen again, especially for lines on Tartan.
