Hi, a co-worker wanted to sell her mother's old lead soldiers and I have been having trouble identifying them. To make matters worse, they are all framed in boxes with velvet and on the box I opened, the information on the base was either glued or painted over. The only information I have come across is that they are possibly British and at least over fifty years old.

The rest of the pictures are at http://imageshack.us/g/811/img3823a.jpg/

Any extra help is appreciated, thank you!

Hi There,

The first five photos look to be CBG Mignot which is a French Company and is still in production so you can do a web search and find out more information. They are followed by a figure that may be from Spain I am unsure of the maker but it could be from a company called Admiril if I have some time I will if I can ID It for you. The next 2 are Britians Cerimonial figures and a set of West Point Cadets with the Colors. The last two photos are also CBG Mignot. I will look at you link and see what I can ID for you.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with Dave. The boxes with backdrops showing scrolls are all Mignots, and they are of relatively recent manufacture, though that can go back as far as the 70's. I have a couple of 4-figure Mignot sets that I bought back then, through the Smithsonian.

Also agree on the Britains, and the Almiral figure.

The West Point cadets look homecast to me, which doesn't preclude a small and obscure manufacturer, but the quality of the paint job, and the simple printed flag make me lean towards a homecaster.

Prost!

Hello,

The figures with text are indeed Mignot. It appears that the previous owner placed the figures inside a picture frame with a cloth background as Mignot never sold
their four figure packs in this manner. Some of the cavalry may be mis-identified, I would have to look closer as I'm writing this after looking at the figures very quickly.
Are these all the Mignots in the collection? If not I would be interested in seeing more.
Regards,
Russ

Hi again

Itook a closer look at the cadets and agree with Brad.

Thank you for all your replies so far, you have all been a big help. The only problem I'm facing now is how to go about selling these. After googling them, they all seem to be part of larger sets or there are duplicate soldiers in the boxes. Even though they aren't still in their original boxes, should I be able to get about half price for them (they probably haven't been touched in over twenty years)?

Thanks again,
Jack

You have a couple of options. You could put them up on eBay, or take the lot to an auction house. There are auctioneers who specialize in toy soldiers, such as Vectis in the UK, or Ray Haradin here in the US, in Pittsburgh. I suspect that the odds of getting the most for your money is with eBay, given the condition and nature of these sets, especially the Mignots. I'm afraid they're not going to be worth too much, that is, these aren't rare sets, but there is a community of Mignot collectors, and I think you might reach them better via eBay. There was a Mignot collector society at one time, with a periodic newsletter, and there may be a website for Mignot collectors, but I haven't looked for one.

You might also sell through websites and forums such as ours, though you must take into account that the rules will differ from site to site. You'll have to do some research.

Hope that helps, prosit!
Brad

Hello again, thanks everyone for all your awesome replies! I went ahead and decided to save all the homecasted pieces and just sell all the CBG Mignot pieces. However, I still have three others that I am not sure about (the quality is a little low on two of them, but they may just be old). Is it possible to get these last three pieces ID'd? Thanks again!

Hi,
Could we get a link to the auctions of eBay (if that s what you chose)? Thanks!

Are there any markings on the undersides of the bases?

The first figure reminds me of Rose's (Russell Gammage's) Royal Navy officer, circa 1780. I have that kit. If I could see the shape of the base, that could help confirm or rule that out.

The last figure has a round base that is reminiscent of the bases of figures made as part of collector's sets, such as those sold by the Franklin Mint. If there are any markings on the underside, it'll help ID the figure.

Prost!
Brad

Looking again, the first figure in your latest group could be a Stadden casting, too. A shot of the base would help. Also, the third figure depicts Admiral Nelson, doesn't it?

Prost!
Brad

The first one is "Captain Cook" and the third one is "Lord Nelson". They both have round bases. I am unable to open up the shadowboxes and even upon opening a broken box, the person who framed these used so much glue that any significant marking or number on the base (I instinctively checked that before posting all those pictures to the forum the first time) is long gone and/or unreadable. There is absolutely no information on the second figure though. And to top it off, it has a square base. If pictures are still needed of the bases, I will post them. However, I am limited to taking pictures of them inside the boxes (they are sealed tighter than Fort Knox).

@Napoleon1er
I wish you would have been here for the first round of the pictures, I didn't even think to post the auction links here and all of them have already been sold.

Thanks for all your help everyone, this has been interesting!

Hello Jackalope

I really like the soldier in the yellow uniform with the curvy sword. Can you tell me about him? what scale is he, and would you sell?

Thanks jim

I am unfamiliar with the scales of toy soldiers. I am definitely wanting to sell, I just have no information to base a price off of. I don't even know who the character is or where it came from. I can take a picture with a ruler or just tell you the measurements if you like.
Thanks,
Jack

Yea. A measurement would be good. I'm not familiar the the prices, maybe someone can give you a ballpark and we can work from there?

I know nothing about this figure, I just like how he looks.

Thanks jim

The figurine (not including the base) is six and a half inches, give or take. I know this figure is relatively unknown, but how does fifty plus shipping sound? I can ship priority mail with insurance for ten bucks. Let me know what you think!
Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack

That figure is actually much bigger than I was looking for. I was hopeing for one about three inches, I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks for your response. jim

No problem, thanks for showing interest at all! Hopefully somebody can help me get to the bottom of these last three figurines. I'd list them on eBay but other than the two with names, I still have no more information.
Thanks,
Jack
