I've been collecting Britains ACW figures for a number of years now. For a long time, I've intended on putting my collection in dioramas, but I've only recently started. This is my first attempt at creating a diorama.

6 April 1862, daybreak, near the main Corinth road, just south of Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee

General Albert S. Johnston of the Army of the Mississippi holds a final conference with his second in command, General P.G.T. Beauregard. As Johnston gives his last instructions to Beauregard, a staff officer orders a captain of the 8th Arkansas Infantry to deploy his company as skirmishers and move forward. Soon, scattered musketry will announce the start of the battle known as Shiloh.

The evening before, when Johnston was warned that it may be too late to prevent a juncture of the armies of Grant and Buell, he dismissed the concern with the comment, "I would fight them if they were a million."

Nice diorama BlackHat! I'm looking forward to seeing your future efforts! One question though, what did you use to make the dirt road?
Cheers,
Brendan

Thanks for the encouragement Brendan. I'm looking forward to tackling some more ACW scenes as time allows.

I used a piece of styrofoam for the diorama base. I created the road by using a chisel to cut the base and make a sunken road with ruts. As the Battle of Shiloh took place after several days of rain, I wanted to create a rutted, muddy road. I used four different shades of brown acrylic craft paint to make the road. I started with the darkest shade and then dry-brushed on the lighter shades. I also used Testors "CreateFX" texture paint "dirt", lightly sprayed over the top as a finishing touch.
