I've come into possession of what I think are early Imperial sets. The label of one says "Set No. 4 Dunedin Highland Rifle Volunteers, 1900."

Does the number mean it's the fourth set they ever produced or just the set number for that particular set.

Thanks in advance.

Brad,

That is the number of that particular set. David Cowe's first toy soldier efforts were confined to production for the local New Zealand market of New Zealand military units. With the encouragement of Bill Connolly, who owned the Toy Soldier Exchange shop in Pasadena, he expanded to selling world-wide and brought out Zulu War, ACW, Crimean War, Sudan, etc. lines. The early New Zealand themed sets originally came with historic, unique photo backdrops, but were later changed to the standard plain backdrops as he expanded production. If you have a copy around somewhere, I wrote an article in the September 2007 issue of Toy Soldier and Model Figures Magazine about Imperial's history.

Mike,

Thanks. The ones I have the photo background inserts. I don't think they've ever been out if the box. Unfortunately, they're not mine and the owner wants to sell them so I have to sell them for him. I believe he has others.
