Most of India being colonies of Great Britian became by default part of the
Allies of WWII. They struggled to resolve their differences with Great Britian,
but where did you read they declaired war on the US?
Gideon is probably referring to the Indian National Congress ("INC") a puppet group created by the Japanese out of captured Indian troops. They might have declared war on the U.S.
India contibuted massively in the fight against Japan in SE asia, however some Indian's did fight for the axis and had their own unit in the german army. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Legion
The Indian Army was theoretically separate from the British Army but pretty much acted as an element of the Crown's forces during WW2.
Indian troops were part of the forces that seized Somalia from Italy and several division fought very bravely in the desert campaigns and on into Italy. The Indians also provided the bulk of the ground forces that fought in the campaigns in Burma and on the Indian border. Without India the British would have been very hard pressed to meet their world-wide committments.
It was the Provisional Government propped up by the German government. It fractured away from the general Indian gov't but they weren't captured Indian troops.
