In our constant efforts to improve the forum, we have now added a completely new feature: Chat!

You now have a bar at the bottom of your page that will allow you to have a one to one conversation with someone from your friends list. If you have someone you really want to talk to, no reason to have to clutter up a thread with what you'd prefer to be a one to one conversation. Simply click on their name and say hello!

For those on Faceook, this is quite similar to their chat feature. Right now you are limited to one to one conversations...the software developers are working on an upgrade which will allow you to add more people to the conversation. Not sure how fast that will arrive.

We have not been able to properly test it (since as soon as we turn it on it'll be seen by everyone) so today we're taking it for a test drive. When I turn it on (in a moment) we'll let folks try it out. If it's a train wreck we'll shut it down to get things fixed. It's supposed to only show you people who are on your friends list (we'll see if that works!).

Let me know if you find any bugs in the system!

So...welcome to TREEFROG CHAT!

Remember, it will only show you people from your friends list to chat with. Since many have not utilized the friends feature of the forum, you may not have anyone listed to chat with! Time to make some friends!

A word about how it works.

Click on the 'chat' portion of the bar at the bottom. That will list the friends that are on-line that you can chat with. Click on one of their names (the green dot means they are on-line) and a small box will appear. Type in what you want to say and it will send your note directly to the person you want to chat with.

If you go to a new webpage I believe that it will lose what you have typed, so if you plan to keep moving around the website while you chat click the little arrow at the top of the chat box that says 'popout.' This will open a seperate window on your computer that will not be lost as you change web pages.

If you think the whole thing is lame, you can use the little sliding box to 'hide chat.'

Enjoy.

That's a nice feature to add that I've seen on other websites. For example on the jazz board I belong to people will use it to discuss a recording they agreed to listen to. By extension, people here could read a certain book and get together to discuss it or work on diorama solutions. Great possibilities. Well done :smile2:

Absolutely love the chat feature, I use it on facebook to talk with friends back East and has always been a good tool, so thanks Pete/Shannon I sure this will be a useful tool on here as well...Sammy

Please note that there is a different 'time-out' period between the forum and the chat feature. Someone may appear to be on-line on the forum, but not available to chat.

The forum considers people logged in for 30 minutes. It's done that way to keep people from getting booted in the middle of writing a post.

Because of that, some people aren't really available to chat. The new feature keeps closer tabs on if you are there or not.
