I recently purchased some of the new rev war figures issued by Britians. I got the Hamilton and the Continental Flag bearer. I love the sculpting and the detail on these figures and I can see why everyone is raving about how great the "new" Britians is. It is fabulous work for sure.

However, I am very dissappointed in the color of the figures. I don't know if it is just me or the particular pieces I got, but the figures are quite dull in color. Everything from the uniforms to their skin color. It stood out so much that upon opening the boxes for the first time, I noticed it and had to compare them to the pictures in the Britians catalog. They are certainly not the same figures as pictured in the catalog. Hamilton, for instance, has a bright red sash around the waist and yellow pants in the catalog. The Hamilton I got has a brownish/dull red sash. I don't know what color you can call the pants. The flesh tones on both figures are gray. I mean really gray, like the guys are dead men walking. There is absolutely no real skin color to them at all. I stood them next to some of the old Britians rev war items and some K&C rev war items and the skin tones are very dull.

Has anyone else experienced this with some of the new stuff? Are the figures pictured in the catalog just prototypes done up with computer-generated air brushing of some sort to make them look good? Or could it be that the figures I got were part of some bad production run? While I am not expecting the figures to be exactly like the ones in the catalog, I do have a certain level of expectation in what I am buying. The on-line pictures and the catalog pictures lead me to believe that I am buying a vibrant, colorful figure and what I got was something else. I am curious to see if any of you have had a similar experience with the new Britians.

Uhh, pictures? I think the napoleonics appear a bit dull. They don't spark like some of the other companies.

Hi KV,

I don't own a digital camera to post any pictures. My in-laws do and I was considering borrowing it from them to show a comparison. So posting some pics may take a while.

I would like to clarify that I am not extremely upset about this. I re-read my post from yesterday and saw how it might be construed as me sending a super angry message to Britians. I am doing nothing of the sort. I was only a little chagrined or set back by the dullness of the figurines. I will proudly display them (without the catalog pictures next to them of course;) ) as they are nice pieces. When it's all said and done, people most likely won't notice anything anyway. And I don't intend on making a huge issue out of this, as it seems so far, that no one else has any similar complaints. I was just let down after seeing a rich and colorful picture in the catalog & on-line and then getting what appears to be some rather dull colored items.

I haven't seen any of the new Rev War or Napoleonics in person yet. I'll have to check them out next time I'm at my local shop. I've been very pleased with the painting on the WW1 line and the Redcoats. Britains wasn't run too well the last few years when RC2/Ertl owned them. But I think the Rev War figures from those years were very good. Hopefully the new stuff will match those figures.

The french ones specifically come to mind as being kind of dull / lifeless. Perfunctory rather than empassioned.

I took a closer look at the figures and compared them to similar K&C figures.
K&C highlights much more and uses brighter colors. Later Britains like set 17701 have used a brighter red and white . They look much better than set 17672. The Britains are getting better. Britains needs to highlight and and underline and use better shading techniques if they want their figures to really stand out.

Hi Guys,

I cant comment on the paint quality for the Napoleonics but for the Victoria Cross Series the figures are top notch! I think the paint on the set I have is among the best I have seen from them a long time. Check them out and see if there are comparisons we can make and maybe post a few pictures.

Dave how many of the VC sets do you have? I just have the Russian firing line. I agree they're great figures. I'll be getting more. Are you going to be getting the Indian Uprising? How about the Redcoats? I really love those.

Hi Jrsteel,

I have the Fusiliers Defending the Colors and will soon be getting Saving Cpt Webb I am also going to get the Mutiney figures but haven't figured out when it will be later this Summer most likely. I am working on a couple of sets I need for my Durbar display from the old retired sets which keep eluding me so once I'm done there I will probably concentrate on the VC series. I also really like the Redcoats and will probably ask my sister who lives near a shop in Massachusetts to pick some up for future Christmas and Birthdays.

I have a bunch of older Crimean War sets that I will probably put out once I get another Curio like the ones Louis found at the Bombay Trading Co so I can put them out in one space. I have been pretty lax in getting sets lately since I got a bunch of stuff for Christmas so once we get through the Spring I will probably go after some new ones.

How about you?

One question for you, Do the Russian Firing Line go well with the older sets Russian Infantry they produced for the Crimean or are they too different?

All the best

Dave
