Hi

just painted this 1st issue set of Austrians by Italeri - pity they are discontinued, although the 2nd version set currently on sale is ok but the figures are larger in stature.

I have seen the 1st set style of sculpture in other sets by Italeri and a few other makers - anyone know who the sculpture artist is?

see links below:

Nice! I have a bunch of them and some of the poses are really elegant. The gear is off on the some of them. I moved some heads around to make units of lights and grenadiersAustrians5.JPGIMG_0244.JPGAustrians1.JPGAustrians4.JPG

Years back I converted and painted up a bunch of these as Austro/Hungarian troops but my converting and painting skills were not as good back then and I didn,t care as much about the uniform and gear detail being as accurate. At some point I,d like to give this set another go with converting and painting, maybe even dig up and repaint these guys??? If I do I,ll repaint them in white pants and kill the Austro/Hungarian pants attempt because they did not wear the garters anyway.
This was a great set and the sculpting back then was better then the last few sets they came out with. I was not at all crazy about second set or that early french set they came out with. The figures were poorly sculpted compared to these and had lots of blocking on the figures.
I wish they would release those early retired sets again because they were way better then the crap they have been releasing lately!

Here's a few Austrians I had out on the table ONCE!
I think there are x 3 24 figure units and a 24 figure Grenadier unit. Plus some Frontline Greandiers, Artillery, and some Niena artillery.
Too bad they don't make any of these anymore. I have hunted for the 1/32 Romans for years, haven't found a one.
Likewise with Zveda , I wish they made some of their sets in 1/32 , but I hear it will never happen.

Still plenty of these Austrians around can be found on EBAY....I remember a few years back there Austrian 1/72 set was very hard to get and even selling on Ebay for $30 -$40...then about a year later I noticed a lot sellers had them in stock and back to the average price of around $10.
Maybe Italeri did a 2nd production run?....So who knows maybe thats possible for there 1/32 sets.
I was hunting Italeri Gauls for ages....but got them in the end a HUGE bunch and cheap too {no box}but that's ok.
As far as there Romans nice figs but only picked up one box of them about 10 years ago......be good if that set made a return!

Outstanding dio. What figures did you use to make the Austrian artillery guys? I'm thinking the heads are from some Timpo cavalry, but I can't make out the bodies. The flags look like paper. Is there a maker for those or did you just somehow print them off the computer?
